Yoke/ universal joint
« on: May 14, 2015, 02:20:48 PM »
Hi all-
New to BUGA. I'm buying a mates 80 CF Beddy. It's undergoing a blue slip inspection and we are stuck here. It has a 4 speed celica gearbox mated to a Holden tail shaft. So before mechanic will pass blue slip it needs a yoke/ universal joint as the one in at the moment is stuffed. Would appreciate any ideas please.
Cheers

weak drive line

Hi.   maybe if you could find a celica tail shaft and get it cut and welded and balanced to your holden tail shaft but finding one would  be your next problem.  i got to ask why is there a celica 4 speed in it ? . is it a holden 6cyl in it.   maybe the celica yoke is not strong enought for the exta  6 cyl power and the weight coming back thought the drive line as the CF is a lot heaver than the celica car and i would not think the celica gear box would be stronger than a holden  Aussi 4 speed gear box. . in the long run you might be better puting a holden Aussi 4 speed it. and get your mate to ajust his price lower to cover your cost of fitting a Aussi 4 speed gearbox in it.

is it that the yoke is not good enough or is it just that the yoke itself is stuffed ?

from my experience with celica 5 speed conversion you need a yoke that fits the celica box with holden 6 uni joint on it, these normally come with conversion kits but you can probably get them separate from dellow or Castlemaine rod shop .... then it would just need a suitable uni which would be from the holden range off the shelf parts ....

also as far as I am aware the celica 4 speed it pretty much the same as the 5 speed, albeit with one less gear and different extension housing.
No matter what the question is, the answer is always more horsepower!

Hi all
Thanks for the welcome. So problem is now solved. I have a new yoke/ uni joint welded and balanced to fit the holden tail shaft. Apparently now strong enough to run a V8. Ive still got the Celica 4 speed. I'm wondering if i should put a 5 speed in at some point. I dont know why all the original modifications/ why not have an aussie 4 speed instead of the celica. Anyway im hoping to pick her up Mon or Tues....

Hi Strangy good to hear your problem solved.  a 5 speed  over drive gearbox would be good if your diff ratio is low and you do a lot of hwy driving to cut down on high rpm at 100km`. i think most 5 speed  overdrive gearboxs are about 17% overdrive.   if cutting high rpm down is your goal when driving on hwy you could put in a taller diff ratio in is  other way to go
