Fitting a Commodore Wiper Motor .... ?!?!?!
« on: February 19, 2015, 08:53:43 PM »
So I've read plenty of posts of people saying that you can replace the Bedford wiper motor with a commodore unit..... bolts straight in, no mods required etc etc .....

my question is, which model commodore motor is the right one to use ? ... I've got a VN/VP and a VR/VS unit, they are pretty much identical except for the wiring plug (not the issue)

I did a search on here and someone said a VX one went straight in ..... from looking at it from ebay pics, it doesn't have anywhere near the right bolt holes in the right spots .... so not sure there .....

so the issue I have with the VN/VP/VR/VS units is that the round motor part will hit on the wiper mount before the bolt holes meet up with the mount, so it either needs spacers between the mount and the motor to stop this which then mean the wiper arm off the motor will then hit the frame ..... or the other option is the mount can be trimmed which will allow the motor to mount flush with the arm sticking out far enough that it wont foul on anything...

I am happy to do the cutting to the mount .... but I just wanted to clarify before I did anything as i'm confused as to why mine doesn't just "bolt straight up" and wondering if I have missed something totally obvious!

attached below is a picture of my wiper assembly mount and how much I think needs to be cut to make it fit on the right in black texta!

I drilled one hole, the other 2 lined up for the VN.
The commodore is a lot smaller motor than the CF one so do have a bit a room to play with but it should be roughly the same angle as the CF one.

If you have to cut some off the mount it wont effect it, my custom one I had to trim the corner but did it because firewall is modified
There are so many people out there who will tell you that you can't. What you've got to do is turn around and say "watch me"

I took my std Bedford unit to the wreckers, and with a bit of persuasion, (some of these guys should not be allowed at the counter)  he let me look in there large crate of Holden wiper motors, the closest one was the VX, smaller than the original unit but fitted very well
Any fool can know, the point is to understand

yeah the issue with the ones I have is that the motor while being smaller, sits closer towards the mounting plate so fouls on it with the bolt holes lined up, I might look at rotating it a bit to get it to foul less .... if I have to re-drill holes to fix it that's easy enough .... :)

taggraphx, the VX ones I've seen seem to have two locating lugs on them where the older ones have the retaining bolts, then off to the side there are two retaining bolts on the VX one which normally retain it to a round tube ?

eg. http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/VT-VX-HOLDEN-COMMODORE-WIPER-MOTOR-/121572014010? is this the same as yours ?

either way I think I'll just either drill new holes or just cut that section out and be done with it :)

Hi Sammy,
I have just put the complete  wiring loom from early VN (buick motor 1988) complete transplant motor gearbox brakes dash and wiper stalk and indicator stalk everything  and the wiper plug fitted straight into the bedford wiper motor, and the wipers work well even have the intermittent mode as well.   The bedford wiper motor is the original one, dont know why yours doesn,t work unless it to do with the early model VN wiring system.
Nothing is impossible it just takes a bit longer

yeah the commodore wiring loom does work with the Bedford wiper motor, but I wanted to put the commodore one on as its far newer, and as it turns out even on the slow speed its faster than the bedfords slow speed :)
