shifter position with Supra box - any adapters?

Hi all,

I've just searched the forum but can't find a specific answer to this question.

Is there a way to install a Toyota W58 5-speed box without butchering the floor and having a drastically rear set shifter? I was just about to purchase a box when I realised the standard floor panel couldn't be used, and that I'd lose the walk through facility of my campervan (www.grouseguitars.com.au/dolph)

So it looks like I stay with the Trimatic.

Or is there a way to modify the box so a usable shifter can be roughly in the standard CF position, just behind the engine cover and offset towards the driver?

Any enlightenment will be much appreciated! And congrats on the updated website.

Neil,

There was some info on the site about a remote shifter for a Toyota gearbox, not sure if it was for the W58.
It came out of a tarago

Thanks Rhett. Tarago makes sense, as they have the power train even further back. I'll investigate further. Nothing else comes up on the BUGA site when I search for Tarago. There must be a solution!

Yes, I tend to agree with Sammy so far. The Trimatic looks like it'll stay put!

That's a great linkage, wendyh. I assume the Ford box doesn't have a push-down or pull-up detent for reverse? If that type of linkage would fit under the floor it'd be an option for me, but I don't want to sacrifice the uncluttered walk through floor area that exists at the moment.

I could always install the 3-speed manual that's in my low-mileage 'spares' CF, but I actually quite like the Trimatic. The only gains I was looking for with a Toyota box is better engine braking on long mountain descents, and slightly more relaxed highway cruising. On the latter I am happy with the existing 'highway' diff ratio - any taller would compromise steep hill climbing and general drivability too much.

I did similar link as WendyH with a toyota 5 speed and built a case over it. It works really well for such a simple connection. the toyota box has a spring loaded reverse path on the far right and back so there is no problem selecting it.

Thanx Neil but it should all go to Ray, he is the mechanic bedhind this resto...im the apprentice 
no theres no pushing up or down for reverse...just the usually across and down with your tongue out the the left  :
Ray loves his beddy yet sometimes its a chalenge keeping this van on the road 
Anyway the 5speed was worth the effort ..the fifth gear is great at higher speeds on long distances...it really drops down the revs... althought it did gear it up a bit when taking off in first gear, since we put 17 inch rims on the back...just gotta get under it a bit more with your right foot
