Cf truck motorhome Dual wheels to single on back
« on: September 01, 2014, 09:00:18 PM »
Hi all,
a bloke asked me today and im not really sure.

Does anyone know if a motor home with standard low speed diff and dual wheels on the back
can be converted to highway diff and wide single wheels without worrying about getting an engineers cert?

And if the standard big drum 6 stud front can be converted to Holden HQ disks without engineers cert?

Thanx for any info regarding questions.

Cheers marty

Marty, it will come down to the rear tyres load carrying capacity.
Most car tyres will only be about 7 to 800 kg max, while lt tyres are about that and more each! and there is 4 of them. :) and a motor home will be "heavy"

Personally, I wouldn't do either conversion.
As a question, has anybody investigated using fiat/transit/Mercedes  "parts" to do a disk front- I know a lot are FWD, but is it a viable alternative?

the dual and single wheel rear ends are different and for different loads. (dual i think is cf-350 3-tone total) the drum size is different  also single being smaller.

Cool, thanx guys,

So i take it a LWB cab chassis motor home 3.5 ton wouldnt take a
chev 12 bolt single wheel diff
Not even with a fat single.  Say 15x 10 HQ stud pattern?

Is a disk brake front a no/no as well?
Cheers

Marty, go and download a catalogue of tyre sizes and that will give the load ratings. I have a Chinese brand on the truck when I bought it.... they have a good catalogue, with max load and sizes etc.
http://www.zc-rubber.com/en/productsdesc.php?cat_id=1

Please note I DO NOT RECOMMEND THESE TYRES, just the catalogue. But in saying that I have had no issues.

cheers

I replaced my diff with a ford AU diff that bolted in perfect and gave me rear disk brackes I also replaced the from end with a HQ and had the disks drilled out to suit ford wheel pattern... I run a 202 with three speed box and she runs and stops like a dream.. great ratio's and the brake lines lined up easy. ... hope this gives you something to think about...

For what it's worth, I replaced my dual wheel diff with a single wheel from an XH falcon ute. Fitted 15 x8 King wheels (Sunraysia lookalikes) with a + 13mm off set & 255/70 light truck tyres. Load capacity on the tyres is 1120kgs. Diff ratio is 3.25 - 100kph @ 2200rpm. Handles full loads very well.

Cheers Russ.
Bedford - always wanted one, now I've got one!
