one other thing is the cresta diff is out on the ground & if i turn the stub axels the tail shaft wont turn.

but if i turn the tail shaft both axels turn.. i know the beddy one worked both ways (axels & tail shaft), is the cresta diffrent in that way.

Put it in, if you get over 80km you will know it's a cresta centre, don't forget you need the diff centre from an Cresta auto at 3.5 ratio non auto is at 4.1 ratio.

its a cresta alright LS if you take the backing plate off it has the ratio stamped on the crown wheel, the cresta diff has the longer tailshaft snout than the bedford, the only difference when you come to fit it is you might have to shorten your driveshaft cheers stevo ;D

Hey Dano, the amount of 'metal' like the first 2 pics, that came out of my van makes me wonder how much more the van will weigh without the weight saving holes..

This week(and last) have been spent doing nothing on the bedford.. the drivers door is going to be an effort, and we have had things to do..

We built up a new race motor(202) up for another driver, finished and delivered it yesterday. We took a skim off the head of our race motor(7thou) to get it closer to the minimum 45cc mark. Gave the car an oil change and new Water Wetter. Also put in a new lower ball joint.. so she's ready for practice on friday and racing saturday night.

And for the last 2 days i've been sticking down the new vinyl on the dash, it's come up ALOT better and easier than i imagined.
also, today we got the van running on petrol again - which is a very good thing! We were dreading the fact that the fuel pump was shot, and that the tank may be full of gum. Fortunately it was just that the fuel cap has a crap seal and the fuel that was in the tank has evaporated over the last 5 or so years..
Fortunately the petrol is now running, as it ran out of gas yesterday, and you cant exactly get a jerry can of gas to get you to the servo.. I'm a very happy man.

So tomorro we'll do some touchups on the white, and after the weekend we'll start butchering the drivers door and then FINALLY she'll be finished.. externally.. the internal reconditioning has only just begun.. muhuhuhahahaahaha

Spent the last 3 day layed up with Man Flu, after a restless (3 hour) sleep it was time to get up for a 6:30 start at my new acting team managers gig.

Out the door on time, only to have the camper do a feeble attempt at starting, it had been playing up a bit and I suspected a faulty park/neutral switch, I noticed a few sparks coming from (near) the switch so I starts pulling the gearshift apart and make a small bypass cable.

Still no joy, cranking over like wheezy asthmatic till the battery lost its umph. BUGA, connect up my battery charger and let it go - it goes into cyclic thermal protection mode, switching its self off ever few minutes - BUGA, get my dads one on, thats working proper.

So inside to try and work from home, left it on the charger for 4 hours, pulled the switch out and cleaned the contacts, gave it a try with the bypass cable and BUGA me still acting up, and sparks coming from the shifter with no visible power source in sight- WTF.

So I work out its not the switch, but I think a poor earth problem with the starting cct going via the gear box linkage to the selector shaft and housing BUGA.

Checked the Engine earth strap and that seems fine BUGA I have an appointment at the kids school so I gotta get it sussed.

Worked out if I push the selector sideways making a decent contact path she starts fine, well that will have to do at the moment adjusted the rear brakes and brake lever for good measure.

Anyone heard of this sort of stray earth stuff before ???

Gidday Warren

I have had a similar problem many years ago with my CF. I found that mine was slow to wind over and after a bit of winding over could smell burning oil. So checked the earth straps. both looked ok, so charged the battery and tried again this time with the engine cover removed and found the burning oil smell comming from the engine earth strap. It was one of those factory type ones that look like a large piece of coax cable with the centre removed and a crimp terminal fitted to each end. Years of oil and crap impregnated into it when it heated up started to burn. Hence my first reaction was to throw this cable away and replace it with a new 70mm cable. Although this helped it still didn't cure the problem. Checked the strap in the battery box and found the bolt giong through into the chassis was loose, tightened it up and hey presto problem cured.

So might pay to check all earths for contuinity.

Hope this helps
cheers Jeff

Thanks Jeff

I am going to get a new one and bolt it on somewhere around the gearbox, but I will check it all out.
