All I can say Dano is crap.
I don't like the look of the oil on the pistons and my guess that it has sat outside for a while- that's why the oil was drained... But that's now history.

My thought is that why shed good money after bad. I'd be cleaning up the bores and making sure there is no gunk in them (the way Busy said), throw on the old head gaskets and the reconed heads and do a compression test.
That way you know what you have. If the compression is all over the place or low, bite the bullet and either recon or throw away and start again.

I would also be questioning the former owner re the honesty of his description and try get some/all $$ back. They knew what they were selling.......

Good luck. Russell
Workin for the weekend!

Yeah cool Russell, I'll do that.....re old owner.....just gathering my thoughts / info for that one....and yes I'll make the call before I start, because I think I'd rather recond the original motor, and that was the plan but I jumped the gun... buga.
cheers.
Can I go play now...?

Sorry to hear of your dilemma Dano.
I think id be taking it back for a refund mate.
How much did they charge you for it?

I bought a little keyhole scope for checking out internal  observations of motor
Bores etc,
They come in real handy sometimes.

OK   , $1250......

All washed out ok, put some grease at the top of the cylinders to trap any grit around rings, did this several times, wash the grease out, this is what was the result...
cyl 3, surface rust but looks old?
cyl 7 was the oil/water mix......note the ring type mark....  opinions please...what do you think?

dropped the sump to see if the water / diesel had made it's way past the rings - or was in the filter / blown head gasket.... oil filter was suprisingly clean with used but cleanish oil, not black . and no not new....sump oil was same, with reasonably clean sump pan , very thin old oil build up, pick up was clean and again no sign of any h20 or diesel

quick emery of the bore, put back together and compression test would be your best move, unless you wanted to do rings and bearings

This arvo I met up with Vanwolf who is visiting Auckland. We went for a bit of a cruise along Tamaki Drive in ol' yella and had a good old van chat. Its always great catching up with those who share "the madness"
