Gas or not to Gas or Dual...
« on: August 01, 2014, 07:17:34 PM »
Hi guys

Can I start by thanking the Buga community there is NO way I would have got mine on the road with out everyone incredible knowledge.

So I went to an LPG converter to talk gas today and he gave me three options but only recommended the third. which was to get it put on gas only with 2 tanks a 60 and a 20. it was called a research system. The quote was a whopping $3800.... and I already have the tank... Is this guy pulling my leg?

Questions
What fuel system to you have on your beddy?
What would be the ultimate?
Is converting the engine to disel an option?

Kind regards

Joshua

you can fit a APA A86 375x860 tank in underneath where spear wheel goes, just make sure you get some supports going from the carrier to the chassis rails (angel iron welded to carrier with little plates on the ends to bolt to chassie) as one thin floor support has to be removed but then the carrier becomes a even better support. you can get some in date ones on ebay or there is some places that do reconditioned ones.
and the filler comes out behind the numberplate

Converting to diesel is just another engine swap. You can't convert a Holden 6 like changing to gas. ultimate set up.... I think what ray is doing (with Wendy) would be up there, but for an 'off the shelf" gas system, the gas injection ones I have heard are pretty good (but expensive). Others of here can comment on the different cams etc to get the best out of a pure gas system.... but what are you trying to achieve.....

Let’s face it, the Bedford’s were never a light weight , so fuel economy will never be like a standard red motor in a light car, so expect to pay a penalty for looking very cool 8) 8) 8)

Workin for the weekend!

A 150 litre gas tank (about 135 usable) fits across the inside of the rear of a Bedford (just inside the rear doors). This is the largest that can be legally fitted in Victoria & means no concerns with ground clearance. I found this to be a great setup in my old van with 350 Chev & Impco carb. The small Impco gas carb is perfectly adequate for most engines. Gas Research systems are great, but pretty expensive.. worthwhile if you are going for all out V8 performance, but overkill for the average application. And yes, $3800 seems expensive.

What motor are you running?

Joshua

I've had several vehicles on Gas, all were dual fuel, which is a compromise between the two, they both have different optimal timing, cam and compression ratio. Personally if  was to do it again I would go straight gas, with cam, head work and timing optimised for gas.

Gas is found all over the place now, not like in the past, so a scuba tank were the fuel tang is and a doughnut one in the spare wheel position would give yo plenty of range and capacity.

Gas Research have a very good reputation for performance vehicles, but the beddy doesn't need that high end sort of stuff, you could scrounge all you need from ebay the main thing is to ensure the converter (liquid LPG to gas) flows more than enough gas for your engine. use a throttle body of a later commode and a good mixer, as others have said have a look at Wendy's and trawl the net for more info.

Talk to a gas fitter, Fit all the components, and get the gas fitter to plumb it all up.

Warren,
im just about to fit my fuel tank up again, my van is dual fuel & my lpg tank is on the wall behind the drivers seat, if you were me, would you ditch the fuel tank, have the gas tank refitted under? Can you get a tank to fit where the fuel tank goes? I have the "next generation" type holley lookin' mixer...
Then i would just haveto have the head modified for just gas?...cheers!

Ray has been an Mechanic and LPG fitter for 25yrs!... all our cars go on stright LPG ( except my BA XR6) didnt want to lose boot space and she is pretty economical.( if you dont put your foot down)
He has even raced three cars on straight LPG.. a twin cam corola, a turbo 2litre escort and xf falcon taxi...all striaght LPG.
All have been Impco systems.
When set up correctly they absolutlu fly! ...were in the process of setting up a turbo for our 202 too! ;D ;D ;D
Running Straight LPG the engine needs to be modified with stainlees steel values, high compression ratio , diferent cam shaft. And a few other things... Then it runs extremley efficiently.
Running dual feul u cant have the engine set up to run on both properly...and  why would you want to pay more for petrol when LPG is cheaper?
If u have Liquid injection (new factory fitted falcons) YOU GAIN POWER and if its the standard vapour systemeyou loss power but its totally insignifican treally.
We have  140 litre infont of the back wheel arches since we only have acess to the back thru the back door due to sliders on the front.
You can buy LPG all over OZ now.
Picking up 2nd hand tanks and conveeteors will make it more affordable...with a $150 inspection fee for tanks 10 yrs old.
Warren has lots of info on some post about LPG too.

And yeah Joshua,  we too arev very greatful for all the information and friendship we have found here on this site.
Well done and thanx to all who join in  :D :D :D :D :D

Cheers Wendy & Ray

Thanks wendy, just to confirm my 186 cranks on lpg, i spoke to grandad(previous owner) who informed me that the valves were standard, not stainless, i have no clue about the cam etc.
If i was to just run it on lpg only can i get away with the internals as they are for now,(low on funds!) & have the cam etc swapped out a little later, i cant see me doing any more than 3-5000 klms in it over the next 3-6 months.....? i have the upper cylinder lubricant thingy all hooked up....

cheers!
Rotti

Yeah it will still run Rotti but you will eventualy burn out valves and prob lose performance.
My old girl does the run to syndey from newcastle once a fortnight and we do weekend all day trips so she was set up properly from start.
one guy Ray got to set up our 179 low compression head..reckons he knew gas...the knucklehead had no idea and ripped us off and put steel valves in not stainless ...didnt take long for me to burn them out on the freeway...so ir took Ray a few knunckheads to find a machinist who is honest and wil  llisten to Ray to set up our heads peoperly.
Rays happy to chat if anyone is need of some help.
$3800 Vintage isprob worht it and soooo nice for all new gear and labour fitting it as it takes a full day to do a LPG conversion. remeber your payng aussie wages not a chinamen ;D
But ohhh it  would be nice to have a V6 ...we would love to put and Ford BA engine in ...the sydney ford wreckers have over 150 engines sitting there going for $150 as they dont blow up...no one needs to replace them...and boy they would make a beddy get up n go!
not like the bomadore engines ..... ;D ;D ;D ;) ;)
Cheers Wendy & Ray
