Yes a v8 would be nice but will it be legal With all the rule changes lately I would be checking with an engineer first before you waste all your time & money

For the sake of a few hundred dollars here and there, a 202 can be livened up nicely. The performance depends on the choice of parts most especially when on a budget.

I have a pretty heavily worked 202 in my HQ, and a 350chev in the Bedford. The HQ would beat the van in a drag race despite being a close race, but would drink twice the fuel in the process.
I should note that the 202 in my HQ is around 80% race spec, mainly including parts from old race motors I've thrown together.

The carb, whilst providing plenty of pulling power, does not have great street manners, however it was built to win races, winning many in its days on the track. For a while there I was getting 82km from 80L of fuel, I've since detuned it so I'm getting more like 200km of 80L fuel.

This being said, you would not have to go to such extremes.

The van on the other hand, despite having the aerodynamics of a brick, the weight of the interior and 350/T400/9" will give me 400+km from 100L of gas when thrashing it. On petrol the van will get lesser economy when thrashing it as the quadrajet dumps ALOT of fuel when those secondaries open up.

Both motors are around 11:1.

In short, to waken up the 202 look at things you can do on the cheap for maximum result. Go see your local racers and find out what they have that they cant use, for instance we used to be able to use any chamber volume we wanted, now we have to use a minimum of 45cc. There will be a few racers nationwide with worked heads they cant use, therefor making them available for purchase.

Ask them about getting a distributor graphed, you may even be able to pick up an old set of headers. Genies or pacemakers can both perform, tho the genies need to be modified slightly for best results - and are then superior in my opinion.

You can go the yella terra option, however I think they are over priced for the base level they are delivered in.

If you have an oversized bore, you'll be better off tho anything can be made to go with the right gear.

Carby options are endless for a street motor, we are limited to a single stromberg, and if the cars are as fast as they are with this, you can only imagine what can be done with bigger carbs.

In reality you'll end up with an entirely different experience v8 vs 202. The v8 will require extensive modifications to be made operational, the 202 can all be done in a day.
However if you plan to do more later, spending money on the 202 is essentially dead money.

You will likely find more performance, cheaper, by fitting a supra 5 speed than going engine mods of a basic level..

food for thought.
