Electronic Speedo

Hi I was wondering if anyone knows how to attach a Halls speed sensor. My Trimatic is the push in type speedo cable and the Hall sensor is a 7/8 18 thread. So how does it attach to the transmission. Thanx Pete

I have been trying to get a speed sensor on my trimatic in my race car for quite a while and haven't been able to find anything that will go straight into the hole in the box, but what I have settled on at this stage (yet to be proven) is a vl commodore dash, as they have a transducer in the back of them that creates a pulse to send to the computer and VL V8's had trimatics behind them so i'll just use that speedo cable!

if there is another solution that will allow the sensor to go straight into the box i'd love to know about it too!!

i got my speed sender from these guys, was not cheap but works well http://www.gauge-shop.com.au/catalogue/27-products-by-application/4-automotive they had to modified speed signal slightly which was a extra $13

they sell adapters as well

do you have the part number of what you got

is it one that goes directly into the box and has the pastic gear on it ?

I have been told they dont make one for a trimatic. Everybody kept saying they go straight on to the transmission and I kept saying how and they kept saying "It just goes on there" I finally found someone who said they dont make one. I have never brought one because I could never work out how they adapt to the push in cable style. Too many young people working in mechanical shops that dont no what there doin.

I know some sensors can go to the flywheel but am not sure if thats the standard or the cam-bus types

I too haven't done much due to never being able to find anything that fitted the trimatics input!

another option to possibly look at, vk calais i think had a digital dash and they had a transducer that bolted to the inner guard basically accepted the trimatic cable and had a speed sensor on it, was like a ratio box looking thing, this should also allow the same result.

Just another 'left field' suggestion. What about if you fitted an ABS sensor to a wheel hub and the pick-up. (perhaps if you have a late model disc brake conversion done you may already have the tone wheel on the back of the disc rotor)

At least this way you get an actual wheel speed and with some electronics skills and some calibration you should be able to get it to work.

And because you live in Geelong, it could be worth a phone call to Gauge Works in Nth Geelong. Luke is very clever with this stuff and if it can be done, he will know how and has probably done it.

Has anyone used the GPS type speedo. Ive heard they dont work in tunnels not that it matters.

I have enough trouble with my GPS in both classics.... think they have too much metal in them to get all the satellite signals.
