Howdy all!
« on: August 03, 2013, 11:23:26 PM »
Well where do I start...

so I work in the mines making sure the computers keep running, and I love holden 6's and efi and all things related :)

I've always loved the old bedfords, and I think part of that was because when I was a lot younger dad's brother in law was part owner of the pitcrew Bedford (the Newcastle blokes might know which one I mean) and all I can remember of it was, chev, saas seats and big fattys on the rear!! and it went hard!

So I have a VZ Commodore Ute which I use as my daily driver and tow car for my race car which is a TG Gemini with a EFI turbo 202 in it (my avatar).... and for the most part the ute does a good job, but it is pretty much on the towing limit and also nothing in the back of it can be secured overnight etc .... that and its getting up in the km's, so I have been thinking about options to replace it with something that's more suited like a van etc, but I also want something with reasonable power etc.

So this got me thinking about a Bedford, and up until recently I didn't actually realise they had holden 6's from the factory, so that rocks in my books :) that and the fact they'd be perfect for a tow car as far as storage and lockable plus from what I have seen they'd be good for tow capacity, and I reckon a 202 Bedford with commodore brakes, diff, efi and T700 tranny would be a nice bit of gear!

So anyways that's me and my long term plan hopefully!

so if anyone has a really cheap Bedford in good condition i'd love to know about it hehehe, otherwise its going to take a while to get the money.... but hey, you got to have goals and dreams!

So I am also the guy that has put up the VK EFI conversion info which I saw in another thread as well as the delco EFI conversion information in the same thread, and its great to see the info is spreading to all kinds of forums and I hope people are getting good use from it, I know when I did particularly the VK EFI conversion no one either wanted to share info (workshops) or they said it can't be tuned or is crap etc so alot of what i did was trail blazing for me and trial and error but i got there in the end with great results :)

Hey Sammy, welcome to Buga. We are all about sharing knowledge here, so thanks for sharing your experience with us. Nice race car by the way. You can't beat a Bedford with a decent power upgrade when it comes to towing and they are something out of the ordinary. You won't believe how many people come up to you in the street to share Bedford memories when you are cruising around in one of these babies. Seems like just about everyone you meet has had some kind of family connection to a Bedford.

Anyway, welcome again. You are in the right place if you are in the market for a Bedford. Cheers Gordon

Hi Sammy Welcom abord Sounds like what you want mecanicaly is what Iv got except for the turbo700 I have a blue 202 bit of porting & extractors auto vr commodor disc brake diff 3.08 & vr front discs All the info is in my gallery & Camper Update posts Also special sections on brakes & diff mods in brake& diff section Your choice of turbo 700 would be good if you keep the diff ratio around 3.70 otherwise when towing your race rig it would never get into top gear unless you turboed the motor The brakes on mine are fantastic best mod iv done & the blue 202 is smoothe as I live in Telegraph Point just north of Port Macquarie Just up the road from you You are welcom to come check mine out anytime Cheers Reid

Thanks guys, and Reidy, I might just have to take you up on that offer one day ... i'm thinking very similar brakes but probably VT Twin Piston calipers on the front ... and yeah turbo is never out of the question ;)

had thought 3.45 diff maybe, I had that in my Torana with the T700 behind the 202 and I was able to get 10L/100kms to work and back with that which is about on par with the VZ Commodore for the same trip and the Torana went harder in a straight line!!

anyways thanks for the welcome guys, I have a lot of gallery and forum stuff to go through hehehe :)

Sammy,

welcome to the mad house.

There is plenty of info here, you will spend hours changing your mind from what you find in here.

I know I have  :D :D

Have you thought about a Cab Chassis and put the Gemini on the back?

I have one as a tow car and much better than towing a trailer. Most of my gear locks up in boxes under the tray, and its a one man loading operation with the winch fitted.

Regards

yeah i have considered that, but i like the idea of the van and possibly thinking a second row of seats in it and maybe even a bed in the back half way up the walls with room under for tools etc .... not real sure on that yet, but definately would like the ability to have a second row of seats as thats one of the compromises with the ute only having two seats!

as far as changing my mind i guess i'm still open to ideas or better ways of doing things, i've done v6 conversions and brake conversions etc into old holdens so theres no issues with whats best and such, its more a matter of what works best for the bedford etc, like the diff and brakes.

i guess firstly i need to see what i can find, who knows i might find one with half the stuff already done or might find a total stocker!

the other thing aswell is i recently built my own car trailer so its virtually brand new hehe!

i know this is not a bedford, but thought i might add some info for you all as to what i tinker with.

so this is my drag car, TG Gemini, borg warner diff cut down for it, fitted with 31 spline spool and moser axles, half cage at the moment, fitted with the 202 and trimatic, commodore brakes all round and so far has run a best of 11.29 @ 123mph with a far too small converter and slipping transmission.

so it originally started out as a delco powered setup which then slowly morphed into this setup which is running 6 LSx coils in wasted spark arrangement with a 36 - 1 crank trigger and no more dizzy :) which is made possible by a custom ignition module from pcmhacking.net

its a GT35 turbo and has been running on methanol with about 9.5-10:1 compression :)

i'm hoping with a 4000rpm converter and the gearbox just finished being rebuilt with full mannual valve body and more HP rating i should just about be able to crack a 10!

i hope you guys enjoy it, i know i do :) and i reckon it would be so cool to tow this to the track with a 202 bedford :D

all the work on this has been done by myself, including the diff shortening, fitting of the motor, and even the rebuilding of the motor and gearbox, and it gives alot of satisfaction :)

for those keen on this sort of stuff theres plenty of videos of it on my youtube channel, this is one of the latest.

Well it looks like the ball is well and truly rolling now :) I'm in the process of ordering a Holden cruze as a daily driver to replace the commodore ute and so after I get it, the plan is to sell the ute and use the proceeds to buy a Bedford ;)
