burnt igntion - need help!

Hi Waseem What year model is your van My camper is a 1976 & the ignition switch is different to yours mine is held on with 2 small screws & the brown wire is power in to the switch seems to have shorted out in the switch probably melted all the way down to the fues box mine has had trouble before I got it as it has a few melted wires too I have just had trouble with mine too not starting & wouldnt keep running when it did so traced the problem back to the ignition switch so I carefully pulled it apart & it was full of gunk & the terminals inside were all corroded so I washed it all out & cleaned up all the terminals & the start terminal was just about burnt out so I am putting a push button start on this week I think if it was left too much longer it would have shorted out inside too & I would have had your problem Dont know if anything else will fit but something later model would be the go If anyone else is having ignition switch problems they should pull them apart & clean them up before they cop the same as you have Cheers Reid

Whatever you do make sure this wire is disconnected when the van is not running as constant power to the coil is likely to cause some more smoke at the very least. This is where the kill switch comes in to stop  / turn off the engine, if your + connection is set up through the main wire (brown) all lights etc will work, if you leave this set up to run and start the van, you will need to put a hidden switch inline to the push button, that you can turn off so no one else can then start the van. Another later switch is also the go I guess, but this way you can do it yourself and have the van back on the road. I know of a guy how did this but never changed it back, of course any extra's etc radio, would need to be fused and hooked up via this positive new wire.

Thanks Bas! I actually saw that auction go up and jumped straight on to it and now i have myself a new ignition and a perfectly unburnt loom yaaaaaay finally! cost $60. I decided be easier to get an electrician to rewire it for me as i really am not very expereinced but ill help him do it so i learn and next time wont need no electrician 

i am afraid that my starter engine may have also burnt out. the chap i got the ignition from his bedford is running a holden 186 red block, does anyone here know if that engine's starter would fit on to my slant 4 2400cc ?

Hi Waseem, Glad to hear you are sorted for an ignition. I suspect that the Holden starter motor won't fit, but I'm not 100% sure. Most Bedfords have been converted to something else motor wise, so its going to be a hard thing to find. Has the electrician opened it up to check what is damaged ? He may be able to fix it. Alternatives are Vauxhall Viva or Vauxhall Victor FE as they ran the same engine so I'm guessing that the starter motors will be the same. Google Vauxhall Club of New Zealand. I recall that they have a website. Someone there may have a spare starter motor for you.

Hi Gordon thanks for the info. The electrician will come re wire it for me tomorrow morning and i really dont know if the starter motor is busted or not i really hope not! I will let u know what happens.
