Hi Waseem,

Welcome to BUGA. I'm also Auckland based and have two Bedford vans. I'm busy doing an engine upgrade from a standard slant 4 to a small block Chev to the van that I intend to keep. I echo exactly what Busy has said regarding upgrading engines. It is not a simple or cheap exercise. But having said that you have definitely come to the right place for advice and support if you do decide to go ahead with your project. You are welcome to drop by my place any weekend and we can chat a bit more about your project. Not sure what area you are in but I am about 8km outside the Auckland city centre. Drop me a PM if you would like to setup a meet.

All the best.
Cheers Gordon

[I wouldn't use the 2.3 engine, it's to under powered. Not many 4 cly's left out there now as most vans were converted to Holden 6 cly (Aussie vans never came out with 4cly, only 6)]

I read this quote by BusyKiwi and had to reply. Australia did in fact get 4cyl Bedfords. I know because I was doing my apprenticeship and had the misfortune to have to service and repair them. I would point out though, they were still badged as Vauxhall Bedfords but sold at the Holden dealerships (where I worked). It was only when they changed the engine and fitted the 173 that they included a bonnet badge 'Powered by Holden'. Unfortunately, they didn't do much with the diff ratio, now the van would pull like nothing else on earth but it reved the engine so hard the fuel economy was dreadful and the 6cyl started having hernias.

They were very desirable for around town delivery but not much good for the longer runs.
