Hi all, A lot of guys over here us MR2 electric power stearing for speedway cars and i would emagine that they would work just as well in a beddie.

As soon as i get the motor back togeather and diff fitted that will be the next project to look at.

Cheers Paddy
be safe out there

depends what tyres your running (how wide), what rim offset you have, how well the front end is setup, how big your steering wheel is and how much weight you have on the front end ie V8 with make steering much heavyer..

205, 215's on the front with standard offset the steering is reasonably light.. untill you want to turn in a shopping centre parking lot, then it gets reasonably heavy..

put fats on with a wide offset a sports steering wheel and i nice v8 chevy.. you have just got yourself strong arm steering!! watch those muscles work!

cheers

When I was picking up my gearbox on Tuesday, I had a look at the hotrod that Steve is building and he has modifird and fitted VN power steering to it. He has built the whole chassis from scratch and the modifies HG crossmember he is using looks like a Bedford one but smaller. He is also using HQ stub axils. Sometime early in the new year I'll e-mail him some measurements of my Bedford and see what has has to say about it. Has anybody out there heard of or tried VN Commodore power steering in a Bedford?

G'day
As far as I know it is not wide enough which causes too much bump steer.
The problem I have is that most of my stories end with... and that is why I am not allowed to go back there!

vn racks are rear mounted so if fitted to a beddy f/end it would steer opposite .makes things interesting in traffic  ;D

Here, do this...

Posted on the old site by Garry

Hi all,

There have been a number of questions both on here and on SCV site about power steering fits to CF Bedfords so I thought it was about time I posted some pics of my setup. This should give you an idea of how it sits.

As some of you already know, I have a 928 left hand drive Porsche steering rack fitted to my LWB, driven by a std 350 chev power steering pump. The pump is fitted in the stock position on the left hand side of the block. The LH drive unit is used to provide an easy fit to the CF as it needs to go in front of the cross member. Most car racks fit to the rear of the cross member. With the LH drive unit you just rotate it end for end and fit it up.

The Porsche also has a long throw, much like the CF rack but not quite the same length so you do loose a few mm in throw but it's hardly noticeable. With most car racks you loose heaps so your turning circle is way less than normal.

As you can see by the pics, the steering column shafts virtually line up but the shaft from the steering column to the rack needs to be modified slightly to fit, depending on what you use for a universal. You can also see the new mounting brackets made to mount the rack. These bolt to the std CF rack mounting plates welded to both sides of the cross member. We also added a couple of extra bolts in the verticle just to make sure. The tie rod end threads also need to be altered to fit the CF tie rod ends.

Front on view of the rack fitted.

Right hand side showing mounting bracket.

Left hand side showing bracket.

Right hand side showing steering column connecting shaft.

Thats about it really. Fairly straight forward.

Cheers Jock, yeah I know about this one. I'm just looking at possible alternatives. These racks don't come cheap and I knpw some have been lucky to pick them up cheap, but I'd like to know what replacement parts would cost being a porsche unit?

The VN racks do bolt onto the back of the crossmember, but............. Just a thought ;) Looks good on the rod! 8)
