Had to get a new windscreen!!
« on: November 07, 2008, 10:07:37 PM »
My son was driving the Beddy (as usual :D) to Busselton when he was passed by a 4WD and the windscreen shattered through the cab and into the rear of the van. He said it sounded like a shotgun!! Just as well they were wearing their sunnies or both he and his mate would have gotten cut eyes for sure. They got a few cuts on their arms. The windscreen must not have been safety as the biggest piece we could find was no bigger than a ten cent piece. We took it into Windscreens O'Briens and they had sourced a new windscreen before we walked into the office, they saw us pull up!!! LOL They then had to source a seal and it was $205.00 incl GST We had to wait for the seal, the windscreen was here the next day.
Hubby took this time to clean out the channel and find any problems that were there. A few holes, nothing major. He cleaned it all up, rustproofed and fixed the holes, (no bog in this) then gave it a new paintjob. I reckon he did a pretty good job. The guy at the paint shop just about laughed out loud when I walked in with the bonnet so he could get a paint match ;D
So now we have a brand new windscreen which is LOVELY and sparkly and looks like it has slight tint to it. Obviously this one is safety glass. Trouble is, now hubby has got a bee in his bum and want to paint the whole car...panel by panel. What with my son driving the thing and hubby wanting to 'do it up' I will never get to drive it!

Yeah thos prices sound about right. The last time I replaced a windscreen the rubber cost more than the glass ??? go figure....

As we only had to pay for the rubber, and it is new and will last for a while, we were happy that $205 was all we had to pay to get the windscreen replaced. Looks pretty  8)

theres two types of windscreens in bedfords toughened screens are usually 3mm bigger and have this logo when they break they shatter into tiny peices

new windscreens are all made from laminated glass witch is layers of glass and plastic , these don`t shatter but the broken glass can be very sharp . toughened glass is easier to install than laminated glass as laminated glass cracks quite easily but toughened glass can take quite a pounding befor it explodes .

more useless imfomation
classic not plastic . in my case bog and fiberglass

nah, we didn't do it. We took it to windscreens O'briens and it was done under insurance. We had the laminated safety glass one installed

To put in a windscreen (or any glass with rubbers):

* Lay the glass face down,
* clean out the rubber (old sealer, glue, silicone, glass ...)
* place the rubber around the glass - if the glass has a filler strip, this should be removed first
* then get some thick string or thin rope (5-10mm thick - any smaller will cut the rubber), and place this in the outer channel of the rubber, ideally the join should be at the bottom - over lap the ends slightly
* place screen in hole and roughly align - bottom edge should sit in right place
* now inside, carefully pull the string/rope which will pull the rubber over the steel edge - do up to corner on one side then the other side, then a side, then the other ... as the string comes out the rubber will just go over the edge, you need to slap the glass (from outside) as you go which will seat the rubber. don't be scared to slap it, it wont smash. If the string/rope does start to cut (which it will if to small or weak rubber) pull in circles (like welding)

* A friend is ideal as they can slap as you pull (err umm ok lol), once it's in give it a good slap around the edges.
* check is all in properly
* get some windscreen sealer (not urethane or silicone) and with a chalking gun insert the sealer around the outside edge (body side not glass side), clean off access with prepsol, turps, petrol etc

* replace filler strip if needed, a special tool is available or you can carefully use your hands in a screwing twisting motion and /or with the help of a blunt screw driver - this part is harder than putting the screen in.

The back door windows however are actually easier to put in a different way, place the rubber in the door hole then feed the glass into the rubber (no string) using just a screw driver

Never use silicone to seal windows as silicone actually attracts moisture - not 100% true as there are two types of it, the type that has an odour does, the other doesn't.

There are so many people out there who will tell you that you can't. What you've got to do is turn around and say "watch me"

Toughened glass only explodes when you hit it on the edge.
