Bedford Fuel Filler caps
« on: October 27, 2008, 01:02:11 PM »
Does anybody Know whether the original Bedofrd fuel filler cap is vented? I'm assuming it is since the tank only seems to have a return line to the top of filler neck to exit air during fill ups. I would love to have somebody confirm this one way or another.

I'm looking at using an after market non vented type lockable cap, cuting the return line and installing an inline venting valve. Hmmm....... Not totally sold on this idea yet, but would love to have my van back on the road in the next 2 weeks so I can drive it to my gig in Brisbane again! :-\

it probably not the best thing to use, i;m going to change it. The performance was fine, i dont think it has much of a seal left on it  :D

yes tweaker, the original fuel filler line did have a return airway but they were very common to perish and split leaving the van full of fumes, if i get a  chance i will take a photo for you ...... after just installing the drop tank I'm going to make a twin filler neck  to an aftermarket filler cap, similar to those used on road bikes . photo's later!
Can I go play now...?

Cheers Dano,

Your right about the return line. This how ever is to prevent fuel splash back by allowing the air to escape during filling.

My issue has been. If I install a non venting after market filler cap (Newton Aero 300), I'll then need to tap the top of the tank and install a vent valve, to allow air into the tank while the fuel pump removes the fuel and allow the fumes out of the tank when gases expand, due to being parked in the sun or whatever.

Tapping the top of the tank was not a problem for me since I already have it out. Problem was I couldn't decided where I wanted to run the vent line to, as it has to exit the van somewhere or the fumes will rise up through the floor. After talking to them at Earls about it, I discovered that can replace the center pin with a venting one, solving my dilema.

The prefered option is to tap the top of the tank and run an actual vent line to the extiror of the van, but this will get my van back on the road for me. I'm keen to be driving it again. It's nearly holidays! ;D

If you haven't thought about it or done it yet I'd recomend puting in the vent line. It could save you a lot of hassels later on!

Peace!

 ;)

Looked into this idea and i`m going to use a roadbike cap of a late model sports bike can get a dented tank with cap and key for about $80
classic not plastic . in my case bog and fiberglass
