Ball Joints
« Reply #11 on: January 08, 2009, 10:30:51 PM »
The guys at WA suspension advised me that the ball joints came in two sizes for a 77 CF, anyone know if this sounds correct?

I wrote down what he said on a postit note and tipped coffee on it so it is unreadable but I think he said they were either 41.5millimetres or 43.5 millimetres or something like that.  he said you cant tell which are fitted until you take the current ones off.

The prices were also quite steep compared to those mentioned above $85-105each.

How concerned do I need to be about there being several sizes, or can I just order them from one of the guys above?

when WA suspension quoted me I though my van was a 77 but on checking it is a 76cfs, but the same issue may exist.

Also any ideas who might be worth using to fit them in WA, I cant be bothered as I have a lack of the right tools for the job.  Has anyone any contacts who do this sort of stuff in WA.

Dave this should help? I posted this on the old site so the prices may differ. I would think a 77 would have the BJ148

After a bit of digging through some old parts books here are the part numbers for CF ball joints

Any parts supplier will be able to order these parts. Or contact me and I'll order them for you.

Upper All - BJ24 @ RRP $97

Lower upto chassis CY636000 BJ268 @ RRP $140
41.5mm

Lower from chassis DY600001 BJ148 @ RRP $145
43.2mm

Tie Rod Ends All TE476R @ RRP $84.25

Tie Rods All RE5270

Craig

PS I have the installation tools I can post the to you. Just send them back when you're done.

yeah there,s definatly 2 sizes, lol
i got caught in that trap,
bought the smaller size,
went to change them and found i needed the larger ones,
took a few more days 2 get them ordered in.
be carefull pressing the top ones in as the top control arms arnt as robust as the bottom ones.
i paid $70ea top and bottom.
bought a press and pressed them in myself.

Ball Joints
« Reply #14 on: January 09, 2009, 01:22:33 PM »
Thanks Guys I am getting closer, is there some way I can tell what size ball joints I need.
None of the WA suppliers seem to stock them and all seem to need to get them ex east coast so it would be a waste of time and freight swapping them if I get the wrong ones.

Craig you are saying then ball joint size depends on chassis number, is this number stamped somewhere, I havent looked on the VIN plate?

Any idea if the 1976 part numbers be be the same as a 1977 model part numbers?

Mine is a 76 (or at least that is what the current rego papers say, it has been re registered at least 5 times as it has done the around Australia trip dozens of times with different owners and has had plates from at least 4 states)  I will look it up tomorrow based on the info on the old site which I seem to recall said how to check.

regards
David

id be carefull going off the number,
might have had a front transplant somewhere along the line.
best removing them both then ordering them, u never know if its got
matching control arms either? might have 1 of each 41.5 and a 43.5
id buy 2 control arms clean and paint em, fit new balljoints then fit em same day.
2 second hand ones wont be dear, then u will have 2 spare in case of drama,s in future.

i will agree with marty.. ive swapped control arms on peoples vans (much easier than pushing ball joints out and in just change whole wishbone) so it definatly is a possiblity having 1 of each or different to orig..

the simple way to tell is one has a grease nipple (smaller older i think ), and one doesn't ( latter larger one). the control arms could easily have been changed oner, so the chassis no. is not a deffinite answer, just what it once was  (it's a bedford, could be any thing)
If it has a grease nipple, ring up JW and order one with a grease nipple, if it doesn't, ring up JW and order one without a grease nipple.

PS it's a bedford so i could be way wrong ;D
If you remove one you can measure it and then order ::)

Good luck
