Speedo Cable problem

Way back when my dad was driving my van, he replaced the nylon cog thingy on the end of the speedo cable a couple of times. It would seize up, or wear out, and we would be left with no speedo (or odo for that matter). I have changed it once and once is enough as the cable runs in somewhere near the gear box and it was rather hard to get to. Now my speedo has gone again.

I'm wondering if anyone has experienced this and has found an elegant solution to this problem

I grabbed a accelerator cable for my "modern" from them & got their catalogue. They don't list Bedford speedo cables, but lots of Holden kits. sure one would match.

I'm guessing you mean on a holden gearbox?
Just to double check, when you have installed a new speedo gear cog into the gearbox, you have then installed the retainer.
When you installed the retainer, did you install it into the groove on the speedo cable or outside the groove which holds the gear further in?

My point is that if you install it in the groove, this is as it was designed. If you install it outside the groove, it causes the gears to mesh incorrectly which damages the nylon cogs.
I've never heard of the speedo gears causing such regular issues unless installed incorrectly, so double check it and you may be in luck

Yes, it's the red 202. I haven't fiddled with the speedo cable or nylon gear for a while now. I will have a look and report back on the position of the retainer.

Meanwhile I have found a free smartphone app (there are many) which shows my speed and even totals my trip distances. I'm sure that even when I get the speedo working again, it's going to be inaccurate anyway!

I invested in a $99.00 GPS from Dick Smith..... Lots less than the cost of a speeding ticket....

I downloaded the SPEEDBOX app from iTunes,.....awesome & was only like $5! GPS speedo in digital or olde tyme analogue look, accurate within 1-3%

I use an app called "Trapster" shows your speed, posted speed streets and location of all known traffic hazards, users can input hazards as well (like mobile speed camera's etc)

pretty good but chews batteries
