A Tale of 2 campervans
G'day

I met a bloke traveling from Toowoomba to Adelaide in his recently purchased CFL campervan bought for $10,000. He had one breakdown, which was a distributor problem. He easily bought a second hand replacement for $10 and kept traveling the same day.

A mate spent over $80,000 on a secondhand Transit based camper to go around Australia... and off he went.
It broke down several times including 1000kms from anywhere. Each time he had to get trucked back to a larger town to get repaired.
An example from his log:
Warburton WA  Checkitout: http://www.panoramio.com/photo/6919026
Stranded here for a week.
About halfway between Kalgoorlie and Alice, shredded a tyre.
Luckily only 2 kms out of Warburton.
Got it replaced, filled up @ $2.35 per litre and on the way again.
At the same spot clutch gave out. Towed back into town. Can't be repaired here.
Needs new slave cylinder major job. Next vehicle transporter to Ford
Kalgoorlie is next Wednesday. Next flight is next Tuesday.
Apparently the slave cylinder is inside the gearbox making for a very expensive repair.

He eventually got home and after half a trip around Australia the van is in such poor shape that another big trip is out of the question.
Half the electrics stopped working the other day and I gave him a hand. We found a fuse box under the bonnet, another under the dash, eventually another one behind that, AND another hidden behind a cover, beside the battery, under the drivers seat! The battery clamp has 2 bolts and a nut holding it and has to be removed before the cover can be moved. Then we found the fuses to be bolt in types that could not be purchased locally and we are in a large regional city. He is one unhappy retiree.

The problem I have is that most of my stories end with... and that is why I am not allowed to go back there!

G'day

A mate was telling me about an issue with the late model Ford Ranger diffs. The wheel bearings are not replaceable, the whole housing has to be replaced at great expense. He had to do one and said that he initially quoted a couple of hundred but ended up charging nearly $3000 and didn't make much out of it.
So don't overload your Ford ranger.
The problem I have is that most of my stories end with... and that is why I am not allowed to go back there!
