Need mechanic for gearbox change!
« on: September 16, 2008, 01:18:08 PM »
Hey guys, got a question out of the blue for ya.  I've got a 74 CF SWB running a red 202 with an aussie 4 speed through a custom diff.  The diff is high ratio making 1st on the 4 speed quite long.  Not a hassle for me (it's been like that for years) but recently when I lent it too a mate he promptly melted my clutch trying to get her up a hill.  So now I've got a reason to do what I've been planning for years, a change over to a supra 5 speed (the W59 in order to shorten 1st as much as possible). I've been in touch with Jeff @ Dellows and arranged a supra gearbox and change over kit, very handy.  Now all I need is a mechanic I can trust to do the change over for me, I have no garage and wouldn't trust myself to do anything to a gearbox.  I live in Thornbury, near Northcote in Melbourne and I'm hoping one of you gents (or ladies) could recommend a trusty mechanic with the time and inclination for this kind of work as close as possible to me.  The clutch is about 15% so i can limp her to a workshop when the traffic is quiet but the closer the better I think.  Any ideas?  Cheers and look forward to hearing from you.

with such a high speed diff are you ever going to get into 5th gear? yeh your right about 1st in the 4 speeds being high.. i just recently swapped my 4peed for a trimatic for the lower ratio in first.. heaps better.. well worth the work.. ben

Hey Morgz

What type od 4 speed are you running? there are two types a M20 & M21 and from memory the M21 (someone correct me if I'm wrong) has a taller first gear.

I run a M20 (I think  ::)) and a 3.08 ratio diff and dont have problems.

Anyway how soon do you need it done, do you have under cover parking or a cement working area?

I ask because the change over is relatively straight forward, and maybe a working Bee could be arranged to do the work, then you get to learn how to do it, and can blame some one else if it stuffs up :D

I'm willing to help out, and I nominate ben to help as well  ;D

Craig could do the photographyl.

And of course Eddy could do the catering.

Ohh I might be in the poo for those comments

Hey there guys, thanks for the quick response from all. Looking forward to meeting up with Ben and Craig (and Warren if you're there) and getting it all done.  I've been sniffing around the BUGA forums for years but never got around to joining up *slaps own forehead*.  Will do my best to keep in the spirit of things and contribute to the community here, it's a good thing to have.  Cheers.
