lap seatbelts bench seats beddy camper???
« on: April 06, 2012, 09:41:10 PM »
hi new member 1st time poster

i am looking at getting my first beddy and am adamant to get a already done camper but there's only one problem  :-\
the boss (missus) says if i want a beddy van and want to keep it it has to have more than 2 seats and off coarse more than 2 seat belts no as most camper beddys have double bench seats 1 down each side i was thinking of getting lap belts installed on the bench seats .  :)
any ideas (a) if it can be done and (b) if its legal would be much appreciated ..

if yu want to do it properly you need to speak to an engineer, you must build to their specs and need to pay them to sign it all off and give you some paperwork so you can register it as a 4 seater or how ever many seats your fitting in. you can do the work yourself but you need to find our whats alowed and whats not first red tape, gotta love it:(

My folks had a Transit motor home with a sette/table combo in the back (seated eight people if I remeber correctly)

They spoke to an engineer, and they were able to run the seatbelts trooper style, we just had to make a mounting bracket to go above the wooden floor.

I made it out of 25mm x 50mm square tubing, notched by 8mm to fit around the wheel arches.

This was over eight years ago so things may have changed some, best to talk to an engineer.

From my understanding if you bolt the belts through the floor then they need reinforcing washers (arounf 50mm dia) to spread the force so the bolts don't pull out.

My camper (SWB auto sleeper) has 4 lap belts in the back done that way.

:) thanks warren that is exactly what i want to do
you wouldn't have any diagrams for this fit out would you mate all ways easier when some one has gone before you and been successful.
can it be any engineer or is there a specific sort of engineer that has to sign off on it
sorry if i sound like a noob but i have never had any thing engineered before

thanks guys for all your advice

Are you looking at a motor home or camper ?

This is the lyaout (not mine) of the seating in the auto camper

and the belts come up from the floor.

But if you go for a motor home it will depend on the layout, something like this will be done differently to

Something like this

I think my folks got the engineer via a caravan place.

The brackets I made went from one part of the steel floor frame to another, but each case will have to be done on its own merits - but should not be to difficult to do.
