embarrassing ..has this happened to you?
« on: February 19, 2012, 07:22:52 PM »
hi Guys...I have an embarrassing confession to make.

I got my Bedford Motorhome stranded ...in my own back yard  :o

I was mowing the back yard and decided to move the beddy
So I could mow the grass under her.

If got a bit of a slope that runs down to the back fence and then a drop
Off into the neibours house.

Well the front brakes must have seized a bit from sitting too long and by the time I applied the hand
Brake I was only feet from the fence ( and into the neighbors house if I wasn't careful)

The motor stalled and trying to heel toe the brake and accelerator while I release the handbrake and
Put into reverse without rolling forward was um ...interesting.

Finally got it into reverse reved it up to tale the load , all 3.5 tonne more revs ...and....nothin
Couldn't even spin the dual wheels on the grass...but the smell of brake lining or should I more correctly
Say clutch let me know to quit..and quit now!! >:(

Doh ...I can't believe it I'm stuck in my own back yard...

I'm gonna have a mate come around next days  or so with a snatch cable to pull me back out onto the
More level ground....times like this I wonder whether having a big old heavy girl that is under powered
Is really worth the effort.

Has anything like this ever happened to any of you ?? :-*

I will post a pic and an update once I've it sorted.

Cheers

Ian

I can't believe the old girl hasn't got enough poke to reverse back up the hill
again !!!  ::)

Only feet from going nose first through the back fence
into the neighbours home !!!

The photo doesn't really show the slope but its basically flat and level
at the rear of the house , but over a 7 degree slope down past the retaining wall
see the wire fence and the angle is slopes to the right for an idea.

Ian

Situations like this do happen :(

But reving the motor and slipping the clutch don't work.

I would get someone to chock the wheels and then try get the revs up around 1200 rpm (just a bit over idle) and then use the clutch, trying not to slip it.

use your off sider to move the chocks each time you move.

In this situation an auto would be a lot better :)

I had a friend who carted Mud Bricks for a living, and he had a small v8 with an auto linked into a 4 speed box then to a highway diff, when he had to negotiate step drives etc he would shift the manual into 1st or 2nd and then just crawl up the incline using the reduced gearing and the contolability of the auto.

Amazing the places he could get.

Gee what a bugger Ian... :-\ One good thing at least your not far from home. ;D Looking at the size of her i would be seriously thinking of a turbo diesel conversion. Used a late model mitsubishi triton to haul a BiG stump at work last week. God damn it had some grunt. Sure it was in 4WD but it did it so easily.

i recon all the weight is in the front of the truck,

Ben

From Memory it was direct coupled from auto output shaft to the manuals input shaft.

I dont think he could change gears on the fly, I trhink had to stop, change gear and go.

Sort of like a low range lever in a 4x4, but slpiting the ratios by 3 or 4 instead of 1.

It would not be too hard to do in a truck with frame rails, a little bit harder in a SBW beddy :)

Update for ya...
It's all good , my mate came around with his 4x4 delica from work and pulled me back up the
Hill on the flat.

Now I can finish painting the roof with the special insulted Heat protecting paint that lowers
The inside ambient temp by up to 15 deg  on a hot day.
Check out this video on YouTube:

insultec

I climb on to the roof from the rear balcony of our two story house that I've parked the van alongside
Near the balcony. Much easier than ladders and stuff.

I wish I had a shed I could park it in to sand her all back and paint her with a nice hard shiney 2pak.

Cheers
