i know it can be done
fitted a 5 speed into many holdens
but never bedford as the gears stick would be to far back

I ran a celica 5 speed in my beddy behind a 202, after going through a number of m20s, it was awsome! I just bent the shifter forward a little. Yeah it was abit weird the shifter being further back, but quickly got used to it. Don't get put off doing the conversion because of the shifter position, they are a great gearbox, and you won't look back.
