speed wobbles
« on: October 05, 2011, 07:11:57 PM »
At the moment I'm sitting on 100kph (I know some of you are jealous)
I can wind her up to 110+ but I get some serious shaking going on. The best way to describe it is a bad wheel balance, or the engine running the wrong firing sequence.
Now I know that its neither of these problems, because my mags are new and balanced.
Might be worth getting them re-aligned.
Also, the shudder can be felt through the steering wheel / column.

Any idea of what to check / replace first?

Ps, I know its a steering / suspension / wheels problem because I've killed the engine whilst driving at speed and its not affected it, so it can't be engine/trans. Also it feels like its frontend, not rear

you dont have drums on the front do you?

i would look at tailshaft angle first.

i dont know how they do it professionally but i would try raising back of tranz with a washer or 2 to see if it improves/ gets worse of course if it gets worse try spacing the tranz crosmember so your lowering the tranz.

When mine had the same problem it was a bent output shaft on the gearbox causing the tailshaft to wobble slightly. An out of balance tailshaft would do the same at higher speeds. It cost me a cracked Hadfield bell housing before I found it!

I've had the drums machines, shoes re lined, all new wheel cylnders, so they 'should've be all good

Also modified and balanced tailshaft a few months ago

can you get front drums balanced? consider these drums originally designed with the beddy that only got up to 70 - 80kph max.

Also look at the rack to steering column coupling as well.
