Hi all,
Thanks for the help regarding the 3.8 install.
At this stage it is either going to be a holden 3.8 V6 or a late model ford straight 6 swap.
Just wondering if anyone has any photos or info on the ford straight 6 install so I can compare the two installs.
I read in another thread that Paul has a ford 250 motor in his van, just wondering if that is an OHC motor or still a pushrod motor? How much has been cut to fit the motor (photos would be great)
Cheers,
Daz

i didnt do the mod myself so i dont kno evrything about it but i can tell u what i kno
its a ford 250 crossflow with an alloy head running on both gas and petrol. i think the engine's out of an XE/XF model ford falcon or similar. its currently being worked on and once i've got it back i'll take some good photos for ya ok?

Hi Paulie,
Thanks for the reply, pardon my ignorance regarding ford straight 6 motors but is the 250 motor in your van OHC, or did they go to ohc later?
Regardless I would really like to see any photos you can post/email of the engine install.
Cheers,
Daz

That Falcon motor will be a pre OHC one. OHC came with the EA in 1988. The XD, XE, and XF had the alloy head OHV crossflow motor, initially with single choke Stromberg and later with twin choke Weber or Efi.
I don't know what it would entail converting a Bedford, but we run a 1969 Transit which was originally a V4, but when we got it there was an old Falcon 200 and 3 speed between the front seats. We got a long nose from a six cylinder Transit and converted it to XE crossflow and 4 speed from an XF.
We were lucky enough to use a factory crossmember but we had to measure it up and drill and bolt it to the chassis rails. You could probably cut the Bedford mounts off and use a couple of pieces of heavy flatbar to make two triangle shaped plates with a tube running between them. Falcon engine mounts will bolt to the tube, which should rune fore-aft. Gearbox crossmember is a piece of heavy flatbar which has been bent upwards at an angle either side of the Falcon gearbox mount andtheen teh ends are bent vertically to bolt to the sides of the chassis rails with gusset plates on the other sides of the rails. The 4 speed Falcon box shifter is a little far back for our liking, so we are looking at a Dyna box with a Falcon engine conversion bellhousing and a cable shifter.
The Falcon motor is great, lots of torque for towing etc, and it pulls a 3.5 diff easily and really wants something like a 3:1 for cruising, or a 5 speed.
We are running a Falcon diff at ethe moment, but it is too narrow, so we have to run deep dish rims. Also the beam axle is driving us crazy so we are looking at IFS setups that are easy to convert. One of the options onour list is the CF front end, as it is IFS and rack and pinion steering.
As for the wider diff, we are looking at F100, or maybe CF to match the wheel pattern from the CF front end if the CF can be easily converted to higher ratios.
Alternatively a Falcon axle can be widened easily. The axle tubes are different lengths on each side, so you can unpick the tack weld that holds the axle tube in place, remove the short one and fit a long axle and tube from another Falcon diff.
we are also considering 4 linking the diff and lowering the whole van by at least 2", maybe even 4". We run Falcon XY discs with HQ calipers on the front.

Here is a site that shows step by step how to convert a CF to Chev 350 with photos of the process. The same technique would work for the Falcon motor, and it would be simpler as being a six there would be less cutting of the body.
This site shows clearly the type of engine mounts I am talking about, these would work just as well for a Falcon motor.
You couls also use the method shown here to fit a Falcon gearbox crossmember.

I have converted 2 '78 CFS's to Holden 253 v8. Was going to use a Ford 250 on the second one but realised that the low part of the sump where the oil pump is would foul the crossmember. Hardest part of fitting a 253 is making a new engine cover. I also run a 5 spd Toyota Supra box, HQ discs on the front and a Ford 3.23 diff. The 253 has a Holley 350 and Bosch elect. ign.

Hi guys,
Me again! I have been AWOL for a few months but I have been ticking over this conversion in my head all the while.
Paul Andrew: If you have any pics of your ford straight 6 installed I would like to see them, especially engine mount and engine sump shots (if you have them of course). You can send them to: bedfordvan@hotmail.com Thanks!
conrad: If you have since taken any shots of your Nissan straight 6 install into your beddy I would like to see those shots as well. Especially sump and engine/tranny mount pics. ty
Cheers,
Daz
