G'day guys

Ok i've managed to F@@k up again >:(
Ok i removed the gearstick cover from inside the cab.easy job haha till i came to refit it and now i dont know were the wires go on the switches..doooh. and to top it off the van will not start now.
So i need to know which wires go on the red and black switches..
I have two green wires,2 black wires and a grey wire.
I took pictures so you can see.

Also can you tell me what the button on top of the gearstick does,it dosen't seem to be connected to anything or do anything?

Hey Wazzah, that button SHOULD stop you going into reverse without pushing the button.

Its not to hard to nut out.

There are two circuits involved in the auto selector, one which stops the motor from being strated in gear and the other for the reversing lights.

Also there is a circuit to the backlight, so three ccts actually.

It looks like your two purple wires (they are purple in the picture) are heavier and are possibly the power side feeds to the switches.

Seeing as you have two switches (my van has one) you need to sort out which one is the saftey cct and which is for the reverse light.

Do you have a multimeter or test light ?

If you dont it makes it hard, but not impossible, but a mutimeter will make it the easiest.

OK so if you don't have either - make a test light, get a indicator bulb and a 1 meter length of wire, cut the wire in half strip back and solder all four ends, solder one end of one piece to the body (-ve) of the bulb and solder the other length to the centre (+ve) of the bulb - one test light.

Take the test light, attach the -ve lead to the chassis some where and with the ignition OFF stick the +ve lead into one of the purple wires, now turn the ignition on, does the bulb light up -

Yes - then it is a power feed

No - its a feed to somewhere

repeate this for each wire.

Once youve found the two power feeds, connect them to the switches - by the way the grey one might have not come on put your test light back in and turn on the lights - the test light should light up :D

Now you have power to your switches put the selecter into reverse, then put the +ve of the test light onto the other pin of each switch, one of them shoul light up the bulb.

Once youve found the reverse switch remember which on it is and then put the selecter into PARK, touch the +ve lead of your tester to the other switch - it should light up, move the selector into reverse and the bulb should not light, move the selecter into neutral and the bulb should light again.

Now all you have to do is work out which wire (most likely on of the green ones) goes to the starter.

Easiest way to do that would be to trace it as its not far to the starter, or you could try one, then the onther onto the saftey switch and try and start the motor.

Now once youve got it all sussed get some insulation tape and wrap some around one set of wires - so you know which are pairs, and write on the selector base the colour pair and put an arrow toward the switch they go to then next time you wont have to stuff around again.

That button is pretty important,
you need to lift the internal shaft inside the shifter lever,
 lift the shaft with a screwdriver from underneath (unscrew and lift plastic base, but do not remove)
The button screws onto the threaded end of the internal shaft,
the knob screws onto the threaded end of the external shaft,
Do them up together and this preloads the spring inside the knob and holds the internal shaft up,
which engages the locks stopping you changing gears accidentaly (ouch)

Thanks Guys for the information.

I friend is going to bring his mutimeter round to work out which wire is live.
As for the button i give that a go and see how i get on.I will let you all know..

The two heavy gauge purple wires are for the starter inhibit switch. One of the purple wires comes from the start position on the ignition switch and the other purple wire goes to the starter solenoid.

The two green wires are for the back up lights. One green wire comes from ignition on on the ignition switch and the other green wire goes to the back up lights.

To find which switch is which, put the gear shifter into the park position then with the multimeter check which switch has continuity, that is the switch which both purple wires go onto.

I have the same setup and mine is apart at the moment as well.  Purples to the front, greens to the rear and grey not connected, just to confirm what the others said.  Great explanations, I had no idea what they did!

The grey wire is the feed to the shift quadrant illumination bulb, if fitted. It should originate in a splice in the gauge cluster illumination lights and dim with them.

Thanks guys that knew the colour code  :D

Mine has a holden shifter with one switch doing both functions and red and black wires by memory.

I got stuck once when the wire came off the starter and wouldent start, I pulled all the wires off to try and bypass the (I thought) faulty switch, but that didn't work so I had to try and suss it all out on the side of the road in peak hour - NOT HAPPY JAN  >:(

Finally saw the wire off the starter and then had to go through the proccess I described to get it all wired correctly.
