so it could have just failed where the welds were. how is the diff conversion done? just but welded? could be a problem.

If it was converted it should of been joined further out. The old axle tubes are usually turned down and pressed into the head tube and welded.
from factory the tubes are plug and seam welded. without knowing the full story it looks like the factory weld broke at the bottom causing the case to split. thats a lot of pressure to do that though.
A diff under pressure usually goes out of alignment and snaps the axles at the spline
