beddy gremlins at it again
« on: February 12, 2011, 08:14:43 PM »
have just put the diff back together, new bearings etc etc blah blah & when i put the drums back on, all spins niclely until i put the wheel on & as soon as a nut tightens up against the drum n axle...it jams  :o ...wont move...de nada....  :'(  :'(  have worked out that the drum recess  is pushing against the curved edge of brake backing plate???.. it is put back correctly,i am sure  ::)  ::) is there a spacer between the axle & drum i have overlooked...?? though it does not sound right, i  do not seem to remember any when i pulled it apart. sigh...or  just another case of lucky me gettin a visit from the beddy gremlin of mayhem
I,d rather sell my...mum,....than my bedford!!

skippy didja put the parts on the axle in the right order?? ie; retainer plate'backing plate(shoes mount to this ,bearing & retainer ring .if you have the retainer & backing plate arse about it will cause your problem. and no ya cant fix it with a block of wood!!! ;)   Cheers Neil

you say it happened when one wheel nut was tight, sounds like the wheel isn't on properly.
Hold the wheel against the drum and tighten with fingers, then half turn on one nut then half turn on opposite nut ... continue until tight, then the other ones.
alloy wheels can twist on the studs.
There are so many people out there who will tell you that you can't. What you've got to do is turn around and say "watch me"

pretty sure merlin.. had the outer bearing retaining plate on the axle first, then bearing ,made sure it was against axle seat, then retaining ring. then placed the brake mounting plate on the diff housing n slid the axle assembly in  did the 6 bolts up...all hunky dory...assembled brakes..all fine.. made sure drum n axle rolled freely...laughin  :D did wheel up ...went to spin wheel  ???  ??? wouldnt budge  >:(  >:( pulled wheel off n drum spun again  ???  ??? put wheel on  wheel jammed solid again... :'(  :'( can see scrape marks at bottom of recess on inner edge of drums. maybe original setup was a bodge n scarper as one bearing originally had a few mil play between retaining  ring & axle bearing seat. if i cant use a block of wood,.. can i use apolyflap wheel n grinder lol  ;D no.. obs, the brake clip n springs are true n fine, an dont think it could be the wheel busy, as this happens also with just the drum on ,no wheel,, i just wondering if delrazor had a similar prob, but cant find the post..sigh..to hard ..goin to bed ..tacle it again tomoz..

He Skip

I'm just thinking outside the box here, have you tried adjusting "off" the brakes - maybe something is pushing the shoes sideways and locking them when you do the bolts up.

I used to be vague..................Now I'm not so sure

skip check the old bearing and compare it to the new one to see if the old one has an offset inner race or the outer race on the new bearing is thinner than the old one it sounds like your axle is seating too deep in the housing if so you can make up a shim and stick it in between the bearing and the housing   Cheers Neil
