Front door window modifications
« on: October 14, 2010, 12:00:31 AM »
Has anybody else ever considered cutting the front lower corner off the window glass so that it can be fully lowered when down? I understand that the standard mechanisms cannot go low enough for this to be an issue anyway, but I was buggering around the other day trying to get the window lower only to realise it is the window that is the problem..
The only person I can think of that this wont affect is Busykiwi with his already 'shortened' windows.

I looked into it briefly while installing the power window mechs, and it wouldn't need alot taken off, the only problem is that if you take too much off it will be noticable when the window is up.

If I can get hold of a few spare windows I will look at having some cut up - may even do it myself, im pretty sure i have a glass cutter somewhere..

anyway, keen to hear of anyones experiences on the matter.

you can't cut the glass, it's toughened, will just shatter

You can't really shorten them anyway, if you (could) cut the top off you'd have to cut the front edge too so it seals when up
There are so many people out there who will tell you that you can't. What you've got to do is turn around and say "watch me"

you need a better regulator that goes down further.

Busy, its not the top i want to cut, its the bottom. I didn't think about the fact that the glass is toughened..

Ben, i have made my mechanisms adjustable by about 70mm, and from one extreme to the other the glass sits in the same spot. it took me a while of raging to realise it was the glass sitting on the section when the door curves over the wheel arch. the standard mech doens't go down that far, but my mechs will go well past that point.
The windows now sit about 40mm above the door, i want this flush. From memory i think there is around 45-50mm  to play with on the bottom front of the glass before you'll be able to notice when the window is up.
To get the window right down it sounds like i'll be investing in custom glass.. BUGA

I'd say thats a good reason for a roof chop but your van looks great the way it is

If it was possible I think the engineers would have solved that problem when they designed it...

haha, going by that logic, I would think the engineers would have made the doors and windows actually keep water out.

cover the glass with tape then you can grind it i have done this before. use a disc that you use for cutting tiles
