Aluminium fuel tank fabrication in Melbourne?
« on: September 20, 2010, 10:42:35 PM »
Anyone know any aluminium fabricators in Melburn area or east gippsland area that can custom tanks? I got my very leaky '77 LWB tank out and needs to be replaced.. going to try and fit a VN tank but would like to get a larger capacity tank make up if the budget allows.

Any pointers would be welcomed.. cheers.

if you just want a square/rectangular (non oddly shaped) tank, go to any sheet metal workers that deal with aluminium, they'll fold it up and weld it up for you no worries.
The only thing you'll want to consider is whether you keep the existing fuel pump and gauge setup, or whether to go for a later model type setup.
Shouldn't cost a great deal.. have a look on yellow pages.com.au for 'sheet metal' or something like that

This might be stating the obvious a little but if you go to someone not experienced in making up tanks make sure you get an internal baffle built into the tank otherwise you could get a nasty shock driving up a hill or when driving on a lean etc. There's a little bit more to having a fuel tank made than welding up a box.  ;)

Hey brendon, if you have no luck, i can dig up the details of a guy on the gold coast that will be doing mine, he builds custom tanks for race cars and hot rods. Cost will be different for each tank, based on what you want.

I have a custom made 110 litre alloy tank that I will be removing at some stage.

Changing to straight gas. Should be removing it in the next few months. Let me know if you're interested.

Yep, should fit. It's on a SWB, so there should be more room under a LWB.

Will take some photos & measurements.

Just remember that fuel tanks need engineer approval and you will find it extremely difficult to get an engineer to approve a tank that they didn't see being built.
