Wheels for HQ stud pattern???
« on: August 11, 2010, 09:03:00 PM »
Hi guys........Been ages since I've posted.......seems like the site dropped off the map for a while but so so so so glad it's back online. Felt like I lost an old friend that's just called to get back in touch. Anyway enough of the banter! to my question.

I have got a HQ diff and front end and was wondering what wheels will fit the CF SWB van I have? The reason I ask is I have tried fitting 7" wide holden rims to the back end but the rear offset is too much and the tyres rub on the wheel arches. Obviously heaps of you guys have fitted aftermarket wheels and I'm hoping you can give me some info on what will fit. I'd really like to fit 15" mags of a more modern style if possible as the 15" size will give a wider and more cost effective choice of tyres. I found someone who will modify the steel rims I have to reduce the offset but I would prefer to fit mags.........Any suggestions fellas?????

Cheers in advance

Wayne

Its common for beddies to have had a diff swap to get a decent ratio, often the diffs used are quiet a bit narrower than the standard diffs, sounds like this is your situation.

Easiest way to go is steel wheels with the offset set for your situation, but if you want to run Mags then you have to find or order your mags to suit your required offset.

Sorry I couldnt be more specific than this, but each case is diffiernt as diffs from all sorts of vehicles have been stuck under beddies.

If you have a search here for "Diff" there are a few threads about it, in one Ben talks about the widths of different types of diffs.

what sort of rims/tyres do you have on it currently?
You can get a basic measurement by taking a wheel off and laying it on the ground, putting a straight edge across the tyre face(piece of wood or steel) then measure down to the face of the rim centre, turn the rim over and measure again. This will give you the offset. Eg if they're the same you have an offset of 0, if one is 20mm more than the other you have an offset of 20.
What you need to know is how the current tyres sit in respect to the wheel arches. Are they right at the limit currently? do they have 10mm clearance?

Lets say you have rims with an offset of 0 and you have the tyres at the limit upto the gaurds. You have 7"wide rims and 205 wide tyres.
If you want to go wider you can put 245s on the 7" rims, but you'll need a negative offset of 40 to make them sit in the same spot as the current tyres...

This is the way i understand it anyway, if I've made an error, please feel free to correct me...
