Accellerator with kick down switch
« on: May 31, 2010, 01:32:24 PM »
Hey fellas, i'm looking at fitting a kick down switch to my van, so the auto knows to drop a gear when i need to get thru a set of lights.
Does anyone have a photo of a standard bedford accelerator with a kick down switch(electric) fitted?

Also does anyone have one available to buy?

Cheers fellas

Neil, i had been thinking about the HJ-WB setups too, but i thought having a standard unit would be easier.. thinking about it tho, does a bedford unit run a cable or linkage as standard?

Anyway, i've found a switch sitting in grandad's shed that i should be able to make work, so i'll have at it look tomorro

George, there are times when it is safer to accelerate thru a set of lights than it is to slam on the brakes, and it is at these times that i'd rather the gearbox drop a gear than labouring the motor and driveline

I hate those lights that give you a second between orange and red, and they wonder why there are prangs. I was in the cruiser the other day and the orange was there a second, I hit the gas, and the growling V8 just made the line as it went red. If I didnt run the orange i would of landed in the center of the intersection. Here is a suggestion for those overpaid peanuts in traffic. I think the orange should come on as normal, but b4 going red, the orange should flash on and off for so many seconds b4 going red. That way when it goes steady orange you know you still have time untill it starts flashing, this would stop red light running, except for the hoons of course.
Just my opinion.

All traffic lights are set for a 4 seconds delay in a 60 k zone or 5 seconds for a 80 k zone.

so unless the light is faulty in which case it needs to be reported, sorry dude but you mis-calculated

ben, you may well be right. Thinking about it, the diff gearing and the fact that the 202 is a few cylinders down on the v8s would mean the motor is revving higher in a standard bedford, so it probably doesn't need a kick down switch. I just figured being an auto it would *have* to have a kick down.. but maybe not.

hotrod, you're right. The cameras all have set delays, i think in WA it is 3 seconds for 60km/h and 5 seconds for 80km/h and above..

Warren, i've never heard of trapster, but i dont have an iphone so it's of little use to me unfortunately.. looks like i might have to upgrade over the next few years..

And for everyone else, especially those of you fretting over my delema, i have customised the switch i found yesterday, fitted it upto the accelerator, and wired it all up. I have made it adjustable too just incase i want it more or less intrusive. Doesn't look quite as nice as i originally planned, but i was working with limited resources and time this afternoon, but the result is just what i was after.
While i was at it, i also tightened up my accelerator pedal, so it now has no play in it. The van actually accelerates harder because 1/4 throttle before was only actually 1/8th throttle due to the play, so full throttle before wasn't really full throttle..  ;D

MaTTe

Doesnt have to be an Iphone, can be

iPhone
iPad
Android
Blackberry
Nokia
Windows Mobile
Palm

as well as Garmin & TomTom

You can also go online and directions for a trip and it will have all the known hazards listed.
