Linux
« on: May 21, 2010, 09:56:17 PM »
Just wondering if anyone here uses linux for anything?

For the last few years I have been using PCLinuxOS on my desktop computer at home and I'm currently testing PCLinuxOS 2010 on a test computer.

G'day
I have played with various flavours over the years. In my new job there are lots of computers running mainly Ubuntu and Debian Linux but there are several running SUSE, Redhat and even UNIX.

There are several servers running multiple sessions of virtualbox:
http://www.virtualbox.org/
http://www.packtpub.com/article/installing-virtualbox-on-linux

The reason is that particular software is looking for a operating system configuration that is unique.

You can run virtualbox on windows or Linux and then run another operating system in it.
When running windows within a virtualbox on Linux, a crash is fixed by shutting a window and opening a new one.

But if you want to be a real man run BSD. why?

The problem I have is that most of my stories end with... and that is why I am not allowed to go back there!

I've been using virtualbox since the beginning. Infact I was in the group of initial testers. I use it for testing new/beta apps in test installs of windows and linux.

BSD?? pfft. BSD and even Unix all together just isn't developed/polished as linux these days.

I have to agree with that. Smoothwall is a top notch firewall/gateway. In my last job I used it in a large business as the corporate gateway.

I run a Linux server as my gateway, Smoothwall is awesome!!

Ive done a partial install of ubuntu on an old work laptop to have a play and it seems to speed up the old girl.

Its my first time playing with it, but Im gettng sick of Vi$ta andamthinking of deleting it of my home lap top

Work is still all MicroSoft based though.

haha gotcha.
I only played with BSD once.
It's just that if I got really hungry and had to eat a mascot, I know which one would be more tasty.

If you're impressed with the speed on ubuntu on your old laptop, check out PCLinuxOS LXDE, it will fly.
