hey wraithknight, you guys still have a big custm van culture over there, do you or other kiwi's have any classic old 70s custom van pics, anything we may not have seen here in oz, your custom scene seems to be bigger then here, most of our vanners are daily drivers now.

Custom scene isn't huge here either anymore. It seems to be the same vans at the shows these days.

I've got some photos although the majority aren't great as most of the venues were inside and the lighting wasn't great. Also they were from the late 80's as that is when I got involved.

Have to do some really stupid hours early next week at work and most of it is just waiting around so I'll see about using some of that time and will scan anything that looks like it would come out reasonable and post that. How does that sound?

There are so many people out there who will tell you that you can't. What you've got to do is turn around and say "watch me"

sounds good wraith, we have a handfull of real custom vans here also, and it seems to be the same ones that show up at shows. This is why i am trying to build something completely different. As we all know there are a lot of the same grills out there that guys copy from each other, so when i decided to do my van, i looked at what was not out there, and i'm doing something 100% original to a beddy. This is what i am doing for 80% of my van, there will be a few bits that are on other vans, but for funtionality i am doing them. I am hoping that for the first year at least when people see my van, they will be seeing something not seen on a bedford b4. The down side to having my imagination is, it all takes longer and more expensive, because you are doing things not done yet. The one thing that wont change though, is that beddy shape. We are putting the new grill design to steel this week, something i have been waiting for for years. We look forward to seeing your pics wraith, i recon there must be thousands of pics out there in peoples albums, one day they may all see the light of day again.

I am a big fan of the custom vans and that's why I love this site because of the vast amount of different mods and looks that people have done. One thing I notice about our van when we first took her out of the body shop most people look confused and even asked what is it? That's our fault because nearly everything on the body was modified so I put the Bedford badge back on the bonnet just to help people work it out.

What about you guys in nz do you have the same problem where you have modified so much people don't have a clue what it is?

It doesn't matter. Even when you say it was a CF Bedford you get a blank stare.  ;D The wreckers list Bedfords under the 'Ford' heading on their websites and I gave up trying to get parts through the Holden dealership years ago because every time I tried I was either asked 'what's that?' or was told that it wasn't a GM vehicle  ::)

LOL yeah I can relate to that I rang up rare spares a on day and asked for a price for a seal kit for the van and the guy on the phone must have no clue because he was telling me that my van was a transit. I think I know what my car is. And finaly got a guy that new what I wanted, then I asked for new door seal kit for my old cf 71 swb sliding door van and he told me that there was no such thing that I had a transit not a Bedford LOL I swear I wanted to jump through the phone and rip his head off.

It's always confused me, you put a 74 bedford and transit side by side, and the bedford was the best looking body shape, yet everyone remembers the transit. Maybe it was the ugly headlight bulges, made it look like a frog, but even now the new transit, still has an ugly front, and the rear looks like a house brick. The beddy had all nice rounded edges, everything seems to flow.

Ask people if they remeber the old icecream vans - thats a beddy.

Transits are still being manufactured today, thats why people remember them more - adds in papers etc
