Help Removing Clutch Cable
« on: August 15, 2008, 04:16:34 PM »
Hey All,

I have a '78 Bedford with the supra 5 speed gear box upgrade. Firstly, I have little or no mechanical experience and am am finding not much joy on the net to help either. I have snapped my clutch cable and am trying to replace it but cant remove it from behind the foot peddle. The cable casing seems to be attached to a steel plate in the back of the engine bay going into the car but no amount of unscrewing seems to loosen it. I am going start undoing peddles soon but if anyone could give some advice it would be much appreciated.

yeh pull the big pin out that both brake and clutch pedal swings on.. when you have done that you will be abe to get into the linkage for the cable.

if you still have trouble ill take some photos for you.
cheers

Thanks, for the quick reply.

I'll try to remove it tomorrow and let you know how I go.

Should i loosen or do anything with thing with the brake cable before removing the pin or won't it make a difference?

Dano,
I'm new here but certainly not new to Bedford clutch cables! I have a Supra 5 speed behind a 186.
I've gone through 4 cables and even broke the damn pedal in West Tassie, then had to drive to Launceston changing gears by matching revs to a mates place to get it out and get a welder to fix it!
I changed the clutch (another nightmare) and haven't had further problems......yet.
Would be VERY interested in a hydraulic set-up. If you have photos of how you did it and what toyota slave bit came from where, and etc.. Would be grouse!
1976 SWB CF, 186 block, LPG customised VK EFI self ported Head, LPG converted Ram tube manifold, Extractors, Supra 5 speed, Falcon hwy Diff, HQ Disc brakes, Commodore 3 core cross-flow radiator, HEI, 90 litre LPG.
It can drive up a wall in 5th gear and across the Sun without overheating!

You used to be able to buy hydrolic clutch conversion kits for HQ-WB Holdens through Rare Spares fairly cheap. I'm a bit berwildered about all these broken clutch cables and clutch pedal! :o ........ I've got a chev with a 4 speed Saginaw box in my Beddy and if I drive it in traffic a literally end up with a bruize on the ball of my foot the clutch is so heavy! I'm sure Castlemain would able to make a heavy duty clutch cable. Otherwise I can post the number of a guy in Melbourne that makes cables (excellerator and clutch and the like) if anyone is interestered? For those interested Dellows numbers are 02 97 744 419 or 02 97 743 873 www.dellowauto.com.au  ;)
