Custom Wheels
« on: March 07, 2010, 09:20:36 AM »
Hi Guys, can someone help with some advice. I want to put a set of hurricanes wheels on my van, problem, they dont make hurricanes anymore. So  I  decided to look at 4x4 rims, found a couple I liked, problem, 4x4 rims are 6 stud, and I have hq 5 stud. So I am looking at getting a set of rims cut so that I get the design and stud pattern I want, has anyone gone down this path ? if so what sort of cost is involved ? I know it will depend on detail in the wheel and size, I am looking at maybe a 17x9 or 10 hurricane, i think this is the size of a factory landcruiser 100 wheel. At the moment I have 14x7 hurricanes on there, skinny little things when under a beddy. Thanks guys.

14x7 rims are not skinny. Are you sure of your dimensions? I have 14x7's all round on mine currently with 245 tyres and they are not skinny. You certainly wouldn't want to go to anything wider on the front due to the added stress on the steering componentry as well as the tyre hitting the guards when turning.

Hi Rogue, I am pretty sure we read 14x7 on the rim the other day, will check again when rain stops. I am also opening up my guards a bit and putting some flares on. But I will be getting the right advice from a wheel company b4 i settle on a size. My tyres / wheels look like donuts on my van, everyone comments on how unproportionate they look. mmmmm >:( When you look at the van from behind there is nothing to look at.  ;D I have a pic in my album, I can't post a pic here because I keep getting told that 500 is to big.  :'( >:( ???

hi there, seeing you have hq bolt pattern you can easily have wheels made up.old school wheels like the hurricanes and dragways dont come in sizes larger than 15 inch diameter.you can get new dragways now in sizes up to 19inchbut are very expensive .i was quoted $580 each for 17 inch dragways.some wheel companies sell their wheels blank and you have them drilled out for hq stud pattern.

My main requirement is the tyre width, when you look at it from behind I want something that looks beefy. Height is not so much a requirement, for every inch i lift the van tyre wise, will make it harder for me to get from chair to van. Because i'm doing flares, width is not so much a problem.

Go mad on the rear. I've got 15" 275's on a 10" rim going on the back. Would have liked 295's but sadly they are no longer available. The fronts will be 15" 245's on an 8" rim. The front will be a slimmer tyre for the reasons stated above and I will still be flaring but at least the shape of the wheel arch will remain the same.

hey george, if you mean the hurricanes i'm thinking of, then they are still being produced, we were awarded a new set for winning the endurance race at the end of last year.. 14x8s they're made by ROH. Unless you're talking about different rims all together.

But it sounds liek your problem is tyre width, not rim width.

I have 245s on 15x7 rims on the front, and 295s on 15x10 rims on the back.
I have heard that it is possible(and legal) to fit upto 295s on 8in rims. Check out some wheel websites, they should tell you what the maximum width tyre you can fit for a rim.

If you look real close at your tyre it will probably say something like 205/50/r14. 205 being the tyre width, 50 being the side wall height, and r14 the 14in rim..

You'll probably find you can get 255s or 265s on the back with a 7in rim, but i'd check it first.

wow i didnt think that 295 could go on 8" rims. i was under the impression that a 295 tyre is 12" tyre. which i thought could only go on a 10" rim but im guinna find out.

my experience is you want 295 x 15" on 10" wide rims. best look out there.   1 thing ive found is that you put 265 tyres on 8" rims they look skinnyer than if you put 265 on 10" rim. dont ask ,me why. i think the rim pushes them out fatter which looks cool.                                                                                                                                                                                           you really want 15's on the back and maybe 14's or 15's on the front.  reason being you cant get anythoing wider than a 265 50's profile on 14"s and they look silly. too small. you really need 295 by 15's on the back to make it look right.                                                                                                                                                                                  ben
