lifting the van to remove engine

just after an easy solution on how to remove me engine for me v8 conversion need to know how people lift the van up and remove the front end and engine and the lot removes while the van is still up

you place a thick bit of box tube long enough to go under both sides of your chassis rails at the very front of your beddy's engine bay.  i have a 202 so i had to have the box steel on its side so it did not hit the water pump...

then you simply lift it using some strong chain and a engine crane.

ofcourse you take all safety precautions and make sure you have unbolted everything.

i was asking the same question a few months ago and their was a large thread about it....
i had a quick look but could not find it.

gad,y all hope you are all well...

mr rud put a little extra funds in the bank and i decided to grab me a red 202, m20 and a shifter to match from the wreckers... i also ordered a complete seal kit while i had the dosh.

a few questions arise... i notice you fellas lifting the entire front of your beddy's and rolling out the motor and gear box  on the front end and i was wondering if that approach is 100% necessary?

i have to take off the three speed gear box on the old 186 because i need the bell housing for the four speed so if its just the motor is their enough tilt room to just jack up/wheel stand and with the help of a small engine crane slide the motor out?? (i have gutted the front of all components so their is no radiator or anything)

and would one bother replacing welsh plugs? or if they look fine leave them?

the 202 had "150" (or within 5 of) on compression test (cold) is that normal for a second hand red 202?

any other advice would be appreciated. i have never done a engine change before and i suspect their is a few tricks and hints learned from experience...

lifting the van up might look hard but its not , its only few bolts ;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;just remember to put em all back.lol

yeah, it's the easy way, just remember- safety first.

I used an engine hoist and tow straps, because they wom't scratch the piant.
I bought a couple of bigger axle stands, but still not big enough so put them on SOLID base of redgum blocks, and put the g/box crossmember bolts back in to lock the stands in place.
The beddy is light without the motor and crossmember.

I was a bit nervous before hand, but it went well solo, just don't be in a hurry and drain everything first

thanks guys!

so i just put the solid bar back on (the one the radiator bolts too) have the new motor all painted up and ready and then lift with a hired crane from that solid bar after i have undone the bolts holding the front end to the chaise (is that correct spelling... ow well you know what i mean) , unbolt the old 186 lift it off, bolt new 202 in and roll back under the beddy.

yes.... and remember to do up the front end bolts

sounds simple but i would do it with two people.....

is it pretty easy to line up the front end bolts as you lower the beddy back down or does it take a few goes?

And look at the trolly John Abbot made to make it even easier

A gantry and block and tackle works as well -  see eddys albumn

the beddy is stuck in the garage so i cant get a gantry in there....

i will have to go with the method John Abbot went with but i haven't the money to make trolley.

seems straight forward.... ill work out a cheap option for the lack of trolley.

Hey Able....At a pinch mate ,you could wire a trolley- jack to the end of the gearbox so it wont come off and that way you would have a set of wheels at the back and the beddies wheels at the front and roll it out. Just a thought, when you are undoing the 4 bolts that hold the crossmember to the chassis,they sometimes can be a bit hard to wind out, so you may have to wind them in and out a bit to eventually get them out. i wish i did the welsh plugs while the engine was out cuase it was hard changing them once its bolted in.

Hi Jim...Here are some pics of an engine transplant that Craig and i did on a previous members van. It was the first one that i had done ,and even though it looks a bit daunting,its the way to go.



this is the lifting bar i made up. Once you have removed your radiator,it will sit under the narrowest part of the sub-frame right up the front.

think i might go that approach i have me mates workshop he has three hoist so when he isnt busy i may just see if i can use one then but if not im going to go that approach thanks for the tip john

No probs buddy. If you want to make up a engine trolley like the one we are using in the pics let me know and i will get some measurements and pics for you.

the rolling jack at the back of the gearbox worked great for me on the way out and the way back in...

i just wired it with a coat hanger and dropped it down and out she come. if the jack went on a angle i pushed it true with the broom stick. (safety first)

a old skate board will even do but you will have to lower the gear box down onto the board if you do not own a rolling jack.

no offense to your most excellent trolley john'o but i would rather put the $50-100 into beddy parts

no no no.

you used the bar and engine crane for the lifting but you will have to stabilize the motor and front end when you are pulling it out.

the front end with the motor and gear box are back heavy and will want to tip backwards.

john made up a trolley but i was trying to tell you that a simple rolling jack or skate board will do the trick and you probably have these things already.

i cant justify making up a trolley for something you will hopefully only have to do twice (out and back in).

here is how i did that.

i wont actually lift it as i just got my front end back under the other day... if you were asking a few days before you did i would have been able to do a blow by blow pic and explanation thread.

maybe we should be all thinking like that whenever we do something to our beddy's just in case.
