i was looking into the idea of a 4wd chassis under a bedford, and the GQs are a competent chassis- However, if you have a look on the net, you'll find quite a few cases of the chassis cracking, and not just around welds, some are in very dangerous places, and not necessarily from abusive off roading.
This changed my mind instantly on a patrol chassis, a cruiser might be ok, but in reality the f100/250 may not be as comfortable, or as capable, but it's tough as nails and how heavy would your 4wding needs be in a bedford? anything too severe will be damaging the body with the twisting forces of really rough terrain, the body would have to be strengthened all over. I wouldn't want to be scratching the paint going thru trees, i'd more use it to cruise up and down the beach, and go through the desert.. I don't mind sand and a bit of water, but for deep water crossings, you'll be needing much better seals too..
A bit of food for thought..

what about a hq 1 tonner chassis

There used to be a company in nz in the south island that was building 4x4 bedfords and sending them over the ditch worth trying to find out

Story 1
I was helping Malcom ( a CF owner from way back) move house as I have a car trailer.
I backed down his driveway and had the trailer parked in the carport. As the drivers side was near the fence I had to climb out the passenger side. As I was getting out of the drivers seat I bumped the gearstick and the van rolled back under the carport. The problem was that the van was about 50mm higher than the underside of the carport. Luckily the carport had a bit of flex in it so there was not too much damage. I had to let my tyres down to get out. Of course there were spectators, who all thought the look on my face was priceless.

A funny story about the same carport is that a another mate moved into the same house. He had an EB Falcon that wouldn't idle when cold. The wife got into it and just as she was putting it into gear it started to stall, so she pumped the accelerator and it got stuck on full open as the auto settled in drive. She launched the car through the fence, across the back yard, and into a tree. The car was write off. Try explaining that one.
The problem I have is that most of my stories end with... and that is why I am not allowed to go back there!

MMM try turning right on to Roberts rd Subiaco and going straight ahead into a traffic light control box at 50klms an hour while 2 cops are following you on motorbikes. Bloody steering knuckle! NOT HAPPY JAN! >:(

Note to self:
When getting playful around a wet corner and the back end breaks loose do NOT remove your foot from the accelerator no matter how good an idea it seems at the time.

You whiplash, put a small ding in the tree and a somewhat larger one in the front end... :'(

And the radiator springs a leak...
It's not how hard you hit it - it's how you hit it hard
