Straight from the script of a movie is a tale I am still pinching myself about. I have not been this excited since I had a job where young mothers displayed the fullness of their womenhood to me.
The photos are taken on the set of the new Aussie movie "Prime Mover". "Fuel on the Newell" is the local service station and was a feature of the movie. The big Western Star is one of the trucks out of the movie and on the back of it is the red CFL dual cab thanks to the generosity of Rubman.
I have wanted a dual cab for over 20 years and now I have one. It needs a fair amount of work but it has been well built and will restore very easily. I am still making a list of things to do and I have yet to decide whether to tidy it up and run it or pull it down and do a full rebuild. I have an Engineer and a panel beater coming to inspect and will make a decision after that.
Earlier this week Rubman contacted me with an offer and I did not haggle even though I did not have the dough. I took an advance on my credit card.
Next to arrange freight. No backloads were available before Xmas so the full rate of $3000 plus gst was quoted. Ouch!
It would have to sit in Melbourne until the new year and risk being vandalised or I would have to try to drive it home. Neither option was looking good.
On Friday afternoon my bank contacted me to say that the payment had not gone through and they were going to retry Friday night. Just after that on the way home I stopped to see a mate and saw his truck loaded.
"Where are you going?" I asked.
"I am going no-where, but another mate is borrowing it to go to Melbourne tonight"
"Does he have a backload?"
"No"
"When is he leaving?"
"In an hour"
The time was 5:40pm and I was 15 minutes drive from town.
I rang the bank, cancelled the direct payment and asked for cash, now!
I got to the bank with a minute to spare.
I tried to ring Rubman but it rang out. I finally got onto him and then a tilt tray truck in Melbourne.
I got back to the truck as the boys were loading their bags into the sleeper.
Yes they would bring it back for me as long as they didn't have to wait. They would be unloaded at 7am.
The tilt tray bloke then said he couldn't meet them before 9am.
I had a very sleepless night.
Well the boys got stuffed around unloading so they were not waiting for the tilt tray so it was all good.
They got back Saturday night and I went down this morning and unloaded it.
I started it easliy and it drove nicely so I parked it locked it up. I took the grankids into town and then came back to drive it home.
Then I found the ignition key did not fit the door. I considered a brick and then realised I could pull the window out of one of the rear doors.
I then drove it home starting very gently and then giving it more juice until I was sitting on 120km/h and doing it easily. So it didn't take me long to get home.
I spent the afternoon going over it compiling a list of urgent and nonurgent repairs.
It does have a dual fuel Chev V8, T350, 9" dually diff, P76 power steer, disc brakes.
How do I feel?
If you asked me a week ago if I would ever have a Dual Cab I would have laughed at you,
but here I am with one sitting in my yard. I am sure the woody wiil be soft by the morning.
