Thanks Rogue, that clarifys it much betrer  ;D I thought by your photos you had to weld to under the bottom of the gutter section. Tjhat makes more sense to me now. What is the maximum size screws you can use before going thru the roof? And how do u suggest getting the piano hinge onto a fibreglass door, obviously you cannot weld.....

Cheers buddy

Ok, fibreglass... that's ugly. You certainly won't be able to use the method used on my van and I doubt the method you were planning on would work either. There just wouldn't be enough strength in the top of the door.

Hmmm, thinking about this all the way home and I don't think there is any method you could use to mount a fibre glass door if that was all it was contructed of.

However if you embedded a steel framework into the fibreglass then you could probably use just about any method you liked depending on the final weight of the door. You could also have good solid steel mounting points in the door you could just bolt onto on either side.

Yes Rogue, this is what i too have been thinking...Anywhere on the door that needs to be screwed into or attached to, would have to be re-enforced with steel behind it. Benny has done that already for some of the mounting points..I was thinking if i went down the piano hinge route, i would put some steel under the top of the door. Thanks for your consideration mate!

One thing that hasn't been mentioned - door rubbers

piano hinges are good but don't allow a seal between it, if you do try squeeze the door closed with full rubber in there you will be putting massive amount of pressure on the hinge pin and inturn would break the collars holding the pin (same as any hinge)

so you have to compromise; looks (show cars most often dont use door rubbers) vs practical (piano higes take up the less room) vs weather (dust, water, wind noise ...) ...  maybe use the paino hinge but change the door rubbers to a jappa style

and use stainless steel
There are so many people out there who will tell you that you can't. What you've got to do is turn around and say "watch me"

hey guys haven't been on for a while due to compromises with the f/book saga, won't go there but, have been keeping an eye on the forums, hey mark B I have mounted one of bens fibreglass doors gullwing style using two aluminium heavy duty hinges and they seem to have worked out okay, have to make a few alterations but the hinges will be fully concealed when finished, door opens and closes no worries with plenty of room for door rubbers and no obvoius problems, I am in Ringwood North if you want to come over and take a look see, the vans in the front drive and I have two hinges left over if your interested .... PM me
