I think I have a vague idea of what you may be talking about but you may run into problems with that as the way you have the hinge bent and mounted the door is going to drop as it swings out and you may have trouble with it scraping on the bottom lip.

You might get some better opinions if you posted an accurate drawing rather than leaving it to our interpretations.

Cheers Rogue, sorry for vagueness.. It was more the hinge 'idea' that i'm trying to get feedback/ideas on. But thanks for your thoughts, appreciated  ;D Here's a very rough and definately not to scale drawing along the bedford idea. i'm a crap drawer so don't hold it against me

Mark

Have a look at wagons, panel vans and commercial vans for how they all do the tailgate/rear door to get some ideas.

To get the clearance you need more like a car door hinge which moves the pivot point further up and back.

In my opinion piano hinges or door hinges like your talking about look naff.

the setup in your drawing would bind within a few degrees of opening.

Here's a sketch of what it looks like. I've used my door mount as an example.

In my opinion piano hinges or door hinges like your talking about look naff.

I fail to see how they can look 'naff' when they are probably one of the most unobtrusive ways of mounting a gullwing door there is. Any other kind of hinge system will require the building of a suitable structure in the roof space of the van to provide solid enough mounting points which then can create an issue if you're wanting to install a head lining of some variety not to mention the lack of available structurally sound framework in the area.

It would do if you wanted to use the door as some kind of verandah although it wouldn't pour into the van, it would just drip down in front of the open doorway which is what would happen with most hinge systems anyway. You could always make an internal gutter that you could just hook on underneath the door when you had it open to channel the water away and unhook it whe you wanted to close the door if that's what you wanted to do but as I just intend to use the van as a normal vehicle and I don't intend living in it, it really doesn't bother me.
