Ben

An old manual I have lists a HQ as weighing 1.4 tonnes
Bedforfs came in different weight capacities look at the Chassis Numbers
The first 2 (97) indicate that it is a CF
The next 2 the carrying capacity
1=14/18 cwt, 3= 22cwt, 5=25cwt,7=35 cwt
! cwt = 112 lbs= 49.7 kg approx
1=.94 tonns 3= 1.09 tonnes,5=1.25 tonnes, 7=1.73 tonnes the weight of the vehicle then has to be added on
These figures came from the old BUGA site

Cheers

Joe

so what did the people doing the conversion end up doing, and was the cost?

was the main reason for not wanting to do the holden conversion the stud pattern change or is there other issues such as load or offset changes.

cheers
And you thought owning a bedford was going to be easy.

I'm not aware of any reluctance to swap to HQ discs.
Its a question of whether it is safe to turn down the CF axle (which I believe is illegal anyway), or to enlarge the bearing capacity of the rotors.
There is a bit of stuffing around making adapters to hold the callipers, but overall a simple conversion.
The rear axles can be re studded quite easily, for uniformity.
Funny old life.

G'day
A few thoughts on disc brakes:

Properly adjusted drum brakes are very efficient, the problem is keeping them properly adjusted. Poorly adjusted  drum brakes can be a bit scary, especially at speed.
Drum brakes suffer heat fade under heavy use and dont work well when wet.

The RTA require disc brakes fitted with a V8 conversion and for the conversion to be Engineer approved. The issues include the method of adapting the disc and caliper; and the load rating of the hub.

Having to carry 2 spares is an issue, especially running around the outback. Having the same rims all round would be good.
The problem I have is that most of my stories end with... and that is why I am not allowed to go back there!

the person thinking of the conversion has access to a pair of stub axles off a SWB already fitted with holden brakes. I'm quessing these should fit straight on.  I wasn't to sure with the van being a LWB and having 6 stud wheels.
The original drums are over size and the wheel cylinders are leaking major overhall is needed anyways.

Ahh, you didn't say it was a twin rear wheel model.
I THINK the stubs will fit, but he will need two spare wheels.
He may have trouble getting it certified though, as I believe the CF350 has thicker stub axles than the others, and if so he would be making it weaker than before.

i have a lwb front end here. the stub axels are the same size as early swb (also same bearings too) which is smaller than later swb.

what im not sure about is whether this front end came from an early lwb or a late lwb. and if the lwb stub axels changed diameter at the same time the swb did. (74)

Has anybody come up with a solution yet?
