Fuel Tank : earth n wiring issues
« on: October 25, 2016, 08:00:14 AM »
Hi all
I removed my fuel tank and had it cleaned n sealed by a radiator mob

Can't get fuel guage working again
Dash is out and I'm  working from the wiring cluster but got no signal at dash

On the wiring diagrams on tanks.. In Beddy books lists a fuel tank earth
But on my tank n sender no earth lead .. Just a round plug

Have a few tanks early models w earth
Any ideas ?

G/day Marky.
You might find you need a good earth from the outside of your tank to the body.
Otherwise its trying to earth through the tank straps and its not good enough.
Try an aligator clamp on the tank flange to body to see if it works?
If it does you could drill a tiny hole on the outside of the tank flange ( outside the seam ) and use a selftap screw to secure a wire.

Remember this fancy electricity stuff needs a full circuit.

but I'm going left field here....check the fuse!

and yes the 12 v will be at the gauge... cos the other end is a variable resistance thingy (called a sender unit....lol)
Workin for the weekend!

Correct but you will still need to earth the tank to complete the curcuit.

I put an earth wire, from one of the  screws that hold the sender unit into the tank to the body.  Also put another earth wire  into the seam on the fuel tank to the body.  There is room in the seam but keep it as close to the outside edge as possible, just need enough room to hold the wire.  Make sure you scrape off ant paint dirt or rust to get a good earth.   Hope it helps.
Nothing is impossible it just takes a bit longer
