This is Reids words from the Camper update thread, I have just collected it all into one to make it easier to follow and as a refrence for anyone else doing it.
With this and Reids disc conversion you could run late model wheels with a better choice of rims and tyres, excellent brakes and cruising speed - well done Reid l got the diff sorted it's a VS commie disc brake which we are going to a LONG axle in the short side which makes it 1660 OA Should make it long enough
Machine it square & pull it together with a long length of boocker rod & we have another axel with 3rollers spotted on it & check it with machine blue & heat &shrink were necessary
Hi guys seems time flies when your haveing fun havent got a lot done but got the suspension done new bushes & belljoints all painted & back in Took a half coil off the front & it came down about 25mm & left out 1 leaf on the rear it came down about 40mm Will come down more when I get everything in like 80ltrs off water & extra batteries & all that stuff you need for camping Will put some photos up off things Ive accquired Cheers Reid
Here is the wheels that will go on when I get the disc break's done & the disc break diff done There 16 x7 genuine Holden mags with 215 / 60R16 tyres I got from the wreckers $300 Not bad I thought & set extractors for free Cheers For now Reid Yous all have a very merry XMAS
* Not sure if this a before & after or after and befor shots shows a change in ride height though - Warren
Well guys im at it again the camper is up on jack stands again & the diff is out & have started to build the new one it is a VN commie disc break one that we are widening 4inches bye useing a long axel in the short side Anyway a picture is worth a 1000 words so here goes cheers Reid
That was the old diff as you can see welded in centre 3.70 ratio 3500 RPM for 100 Ks an hour Way too many revs The new diff is 3.08 should take 1000 revs off
Cut all the unwanted brackets off the new VN commie diff
Some more
Thats all for now welding starts tomorrow Cheers Reid
Welding all done
Just needs cleanup & paint
All Painted
Looking good Reid. What sort of dollas did the diff end up costing you? If its cheap enough it could be a better alternative to 9inch diffs
Warren
Long story Warren I got the VN diff off my brother inlaw he's doing up a VH commie & has stuff laying around everywhere it was complete except for axels which he used in another project got diff for nothing you should get one from wreckers for about $ 100 - 150 Then I had to buy 2 long axels cost me 30 bucks each but prob should have been $50 each Then you need about 6 inches off the end off another diff Holden are good as there all the same diametr & the same bolt patern on the end A 6inch piece of heavy gauge tubing that fits inside axel tubes you will have to machine it to fit tight inside cost me 10 bucks All the welding cost me the price off a packet off rods 10 bucks Its handy haveing a b inlaw thats a boiler maker welder with a laith I only need a new brake hose made up & the brake line replaised on the side we lengthend of course we pinched the spring pads & shocko brackets off the old diff SoWarren it cost me about 100 bucks & it has 28 spline axels same as 9inch so is plenty strong enough The finished length is 1670 still 60mm short of the bedford diff but you can make that up with wider wheels
I dont think ive missed anyhing but just ask if you think of anything Cheers Reid
Thanks Reid
So you could buy two diffs, put it to gether and still be cheaper than a 9inch.
Mmmmmmm
Warren
That would be the way to do it You would have the extra long axel & tube end & if you were lucky enough to find one with a 3.45 ratio that would be even better
Well guys have had a couple off good weeks finally got the diff in & running a lot of fiddling but it all worked out great Here's some photos
Had to make up 2 new brake pipes Short one to connect from orignal to flexable pipe
Had 2 make 2 new brake lines short one to join orignal beddie 2 Comm flexi pipe Driveshaft bolted streight in
Some more
Had 2 move flexi pipe over so it wouldnt pull tight when jacked up
Could put 10 inch wheels under there & still be under guards
Well took the camper out for a good run today Man what a difference the brakes are excellent getting better as the pads bed in I was worried that the 3.08 diff was going to be too high but it is perfect will cruse at 100ks easy at 2800rpm & still got plenty of pickup left
Its much quieter inside without the old noisy diff & it uses 2nd gear more which is good before it hardley used 2nd would go streight to top with the old 3.70 diff With all the new suspension parts & neww shocks it's gone from a shitbox to a LIMO & im as happy as a pig in shit Cheers Reid
