need 12volt help (from ignition switch to distributor solenoid)

hey beddy team, need some help with wiring (from ignition to distributor solenoid)

still having troubles starting the bedford, so i bit the bullet and got an hour out of a mobile mechanic,

he said amongst other stuff (dying starter motor , wet plugs, no actual engine earth and the engine/gearbox is on rubber mounts) that there was only six volts going from ignition into the diz solenoid and i need twelve.

he said replace the wire from the ignition with a new wire to get the twelve volts, so i bought another thicker 3-5mm auto wire and when i was replacing it i notice theres a 10 amp inline
 fuse behind the dash before it reaches ignition , so should i replace the fuse there with another say 30 amp fuse,  or is it not that easy?
basicallly the previous owner has installed a newer (hei distributor?) but left the original wiring behin for the original points distributor.  so how do i get my 12 volts to get this girl moving!

bought a new 200 dollar starter motor, earthed the engine cleaned the plugs and she still wont go! ready to go but wont go.

If it were me, i would spend the money and re-wire and upgrade with late gear. WHY. I suspect by the time you muck around and buy this and that, it would be cheaper, i have said this b4, but, we are dealing with gear that is around 35yrs old now, so unless you have a stock pile of vans or parts [like benny] lol then by the time you replace this and that it is going to be time consuming. I am redoing all mine, and hopefully i will get years of problem free driving.

Not clear on what your issue is.

Is the switch faulty ?
Do you have spark ?
Does the coil suit the dizzy ?
Is the motor cranking over properly ?
Do you have Petrol/gas ?

All trouble shooting is a logical stepping through each part of the sytem ensuring its working.
If you dont have a logical approach you end up chasing your tail.

Can you bypass the ignition switch, by making a temporary one ?

A couple of wires with aligator clips at each end can be very usefull in bypassing all the other wiring and feeding power directly to where you require it in your case the distributor.

Get a copy of the wiring diagram off here and look just at the ignition/starter to battery circuits - ignore everything else, look at the different points in the circuit.

Make an equivilent circuit out of your wire and aligator clips - if it still wont start - its the dizzy itself.

If it does start then reduce the bypass to along those points of the actual ignition circuit till it wont start again - the issue then is in that last link.

If your going to replace anything - start with the cheapest bit first.

Many a $10000 system has be stoped by a 10 cent part

ok il  bypass and see.  the ignition switch works, it was petrol/gas now straight petrol, not sure about the coil compatibility tho, - its sounds like its turning over properly, thanks ill try the bypass out  back later...

gidday, it sounds like you have a ballast resistor in line with the ignition wire, if you locate it then bypass it or remove it and join the 2 wires going to it together this should restore 12volts to the dizzy and it should start better. But as warren said run a bypass first to see if it starts better then look for the ballast resistor as that is what drops the 12volt from ignition down to 6volts so as not to burn out the points and coil.
