replacing the cv joint & center bearing
« on: September 06, 2009, 04:49:26 AM »
I have a 1983 CF250 van with a GM 2.3D and 4 speed Bedford gearbox.
It has a 2-piece propshaft and I need to replace the center bearing as the rubber was rotted away.
The problem I came to was that to remove the center bearing you need to remove the CV Joint in the middle and there was no way that the CV Joint was coming off.
It has a clip underneath it that wont let it move so the only way to get it off was to CUT it off. Yes, it sounds stupid that you have to destroy a perfectly good part to get it off but its true.

No my problem is finding replacement parts.
For the center bearing I can use one from a Ford Transit and modify the support bracket.
But the CV Joint is another story, I can't find one anywhere, here in Portugal or even in the UK.

I know this prop-shaft setup is not very common, as in the UK many of the vans used a petrol engine and the gearbox and prop-shaft are different. The earlier vans had a 1-piece shaft and I have seen pics of petrol vans with a cv joint in the rear instead of the middle.

Has anyone ran into this problem? I am looking to find a complete shaft in the scrap yard or just taking the shaft to the machine shop and have the cut it and weld in a U-joint instead.
