leaking sunroof tip
« on: April 01, 2010, 08:29:33 PM »
Got a great tip the other day, first off I don't like those 70s type sunroofs ... nuh not one bit but I got stuck with one on the tow van ... had the perenial drip onto the seats whenever it rained ... mate reckons easy fix is to put bead of silicone on the rubber, then place grease on the glass where the rubber contacts (actually probably easier if you did the grease before the silicone) then close the sunroof till the silicone goes off, open the glass (the silicone doesn't stick to the grease), wipe the grease off the glass and wallah ....... sealed sunroof. Haven't tried it yet but will do next weekend (friggin working tommorrow then off to Shepparton till Sunday and back to work Monday  >:()

Don't use silicone. Get hold of some of the polyurethane sealer that the auto glass guys use. It's fantastic stuff. Sticks like sh1t to a blanket to just about anything but if you want to use it to make gaskets and sealing strips then use the grease technique (or Vaseline) described above however you want to do it so the finished result sits slightly proud of where you want the finished height of the seal to be. This is so when the 2 surfaces you are trying to seal sit together the the seal will be compressed slightly. That is where you will get your seal from.

The seals around my taillights were made using this method. The seal was made with the screws holding the taillights backed off a few turns till the seal was made and set. Then you just tighten up the screws and voila, taillights nicely sealed.
