Blc or blu head on red 202
« on: December 29, 2014, 11:04:24 AM »
Need advice from the engine mod guys

Has Anyone ever put a blue or black head on a red 202,
Can it be done without too much drama?

If its possible has anyone got a part number for a gas cam to suit,
To give uppermost performace without making the motor a time bomb.
Waiting to explode. :D

Cheers marty

Hi Marty,

My beast runs a black head on a 186, and I think it has a cam in it from an efi motor. Using a black/blue head gasket. You are supposed to drill 2 holes into the block to aid cooling, as the water holes from block to head are different. Look at holdenpedia for more info. Image of a modified head at http://holdenpaedia.oldholden.com/File:DSC02665.jpg
Basically use the black head gasket as a guide for where to drill the holes!
You also have to either make a new inlet manifold or modify the engine cover to fit the larger manifold as the blue/black inlet manifold is bigger. None of it is rocket science.
My opinion on my motor is that it’s a gutless piece of shite, with lousy economy… like an absolute best of 18 mpg! As soon as funds allow, I am putting it on a rolling road and might swap cams to something better suited. (there is something seriously wrong, but unsure what!) I am off to WA in April  ;D ;D ;D, planning on driving about 7000 km, so a small improve will save lots!  ;)
There was a post on here about 12 months ago, by I think Sammy, that had a really good link to getting the most GG’s from a red engine, and basically said use a red head as there is more scope to modify to get higher HP figures.

My question is why?
Talk to Ray about what he did to his/Wendy’s van as that looks the way to go, even without the turbo!
Workin for the weekend!

yes can be done. GOGGLE - blue head / red block.  you find info there. try oldholden.com . they have lots of info there on holdens.  if your old red engine is getting sad maybe just get a whole blue engine . blue engine has better head  and has HEI dissy@coil.  add a 34 ADM weber carby the ones that come of xf falcon are a great carby. hope this help you out. john

if you want some more details have a look here .... sorry the page is pretty basic but the picture links all work and should give you all the info you need to complete it.

http://www.oldholdens.com/tech/vkeficonversion/index.html#head

I wrote all this a few years ago as part of a VK EFI conversion how to document.

No matter what the question is, the answer is always more horsepower!

the black head you have must be a 3.3..or 202...should get 173 blue head high compression...for 186..

How does I have no idea sound...but may be able to find out what I have.....
I have booked a rolling road with dissy rebuild and re-jetting of a standard 186 carb for Friday (tomorrow). Had a mate weld up a 12 port manifold to take the 186 single barrel carb. This should fit under a standard engine cover.
Trucks on club rego in SA and even what I've done is pushing the historic rego provisions! (some clubs won't even allow a non-standard manifold.. but the rego fee of $144 pa makes it worth while)
Both excited and nervous ... just hoping for some answers and improved power/economy. Oh, and not to cost the earth!  ;)

Will post initial results (if I'm given any) ASAP
Workin for the weekend!
