Just a thought ,but is it possible to put a pop up on the home page indicating people are in the chat room ??? might improve comunication  :)

Unfortunately I don't think this is possible with a lot of modifying/writing code.

Ok I'm looking into some other chat room software that might allow me to have a module under the menu show who is in the chat room.

You could add a counter beside the chat room link, like: Chat Room (2)
You'd need to refresh the chat page every 2-5 mins or so which would update the database giving the amount of folks in there. or you could use cookies to count users expire/refresh every 2-5mins or so
