Rover motor dimensions?
« on: October 08, 2016, 10:35:56 AM »
Hi,  Does anyone have access to a Rover 3.5 to measure up for length and width. I tried google and got vastly different measurements.  Thanks Peter.

3.5 litre Rover V8 is 30" long, 26" wide and 29" high. Weighs 320lbs.
For comparison, other V8's are:

Length x width x height, in inches, without carb (approximately):

Ford 302:        29 x 24 x 27.5          Weight: 460 lbs
351 Cleveland: 29 x 25.5 x 27.5        Weight: 550 lbs
351 Windsor:   29 x 25 x 29              Weight: 525 lbs
350 Chev:        28 x 26 x 27             Weight: 575 lbs

Heaps of stuff available for them in the UK, and I believe there are a couple of specialists in this motor based in Australia too.
3.9 litre later version would be good, with the ZF 4 speed auto.

Ok thanks, thats surprising. I thought they were smaller. I just measured up a 253 I have and its 29" including fan and 23" wide or 27" wide with the alt. The biggest benefit seems to be weight.

350 Chev is the best choice I think. Alloy heads will knock a bit of weight off a Chev (about 50lbs less than cast iron heads). 350 will provide the most horsepower per dollar, it would be expensive to get much more than 300hp out of the Rover.

If you mount the engine super low the engine cover can be quite small as the exhaust is beneath the floor. A stock crossmember can be easily modified for V8 motors. Cut off the stock mounts and reposition them at the rear of the crossmember & swap left and right. Mock up with motor in place and low profile / reverse sump & the motor can be mounted pretty low. This mounting also gives heaps of room at the front for thermo fans / big radiator / fan shroud etc.

Thanks for the info, seems to be the way to go. Rovers are a lot bigger than I remembered.

The 3.5L Ecoboost V6 looks very interesting. 365 + HP

small and lightweight, I haven't found the exact dimensions but its smaller than a V8 and should fit very nicely.
