Gearboxes - what sorts have you seen running in a beddy ?

The topic of gearboxes came up in another thread, it got me to thinking (owch that hurts)

Ive seen a few, holden 3 speeds, 4 speeds and autos, Supra 5 speeds, Ive even seen a highace 5 speed in a beddy.

So the question is  "what sorts have you seen running in a beddy?", and what are the pro's and con's of that setup?

I'll start

Standard 3 speed manual.

Pro's - cheap, reliable, simple.

Con's - poor ratio selection, low prefomance, gear linkages wear out over time.

tough as! go good behind a v8

con's

shifters suck!! mates of mine have had the gearbox stuck in reverse and 2nd at the same tiime!!! far out!!

ratios are really high.. and there is a big gab between 3rd and 4th..

G'day

I have/had the following Toyota boxes behind a 202 in Bedfords:

Celica alloy case 5 speed gearbox
Pros: cheap
Con: they break even behind a 202, poor gearshift location

Celica steel case 5 speed gearbox
Pros: cheap
Con: poor gearshift location

Supra alloy case 5 speed gearbox
Pros: light, strong
Con: expensive, poor gearshift location

Hiace Diesel 5 speed gearbox with Magna gearshift.
Pros: Cheap, light, strong, custom located gearshift, uses a Supra Conversion Kit to match to motor.
Con: Short box (longer tailshaft needed)

Dyna 4 cylinder Diesel 5 speed gearbox
Pros: strong, gearshift in a good location,
Con: heavy, expensive, non standard shift pattern, 5th gear very small overdrive.

Dyna 6 cylinder Diesel 5 speed gearbox
Pros: strong, gearshift in a good location, 5th gear is a tall overdrive that works well with a standard diff.
Con: heavy, more expensive, non standard shift pattern

Crown 3 speed with electric overdrive.
Pros: light, strong, gearshift in a original location, uses Celica steel case conversion to match to motor.
Con: hard to find, electrical wiring involved, adjustment of overdrive change-points needed, no engine braking available when overdrive is on.

The Crown, and then the Hiace, are my pick of the boxes.


Note that when I do a gearbox conversion, I also move the 202 motor back about 45mm to give room for a power steering pump and thermo fans. I make new engine mounting brackets out of 5mm angle iron that achieve the 45mm relocation and still bolt onto the original rubber mounts.
And yes I have to make a new cover.

How much longer does the tailshaft have to be for the Hiace gearbox conversion ?

And do you have any pics of th brackets you use to shift the motor back 45mm ?

Hi black Beddy I see your name is Chris you seem to know a fair bit about gearbox conversions have you had anything to do with autos I would like to fit a Jatco 4 speed Odrive auto to my 202 do you know if they make an adaptor to suit Cheers Reid

Reid Jatco autos are expensive to repair. If you want a 4 speed auto look at the T700 4L60 from a VN or VP Commodore. Castlemaine Rod Shop do have adapters for this conversion.

Thank's for that Hammers yknow my brother in law threw a 4L60 to the tip a while back before I got my Beddi if Ida only known anyway thers plenty of them around & he even surjested a 4L60 this arvo so ill have to keep my ear to the ground Cheers Reid

Sorry Reid, I am not into autos. They are expensive to buy, expensive to repair, use more fuel, and you loose a bit of power, making overtaking a bit harder.

I will post some photos and drawings showing dimensions. I cut mine out of C channel of a surprising similarity to the posts used in roadside railing.
The Hiace box is substantially shorter. I will measure the gearboxs to give you and answer.
The problem I have is that most of my stories end with... and that is why I am not allowed to go back there!

just asking as ive got 3 good boxes sittin in the parts shed.
